First of all thanks for taking the time to read this to try to help. My problem is this. I currently live in a 3 floor unit and we share comcast wireless cable internet. Previously everything was working fine but one of the tenants downstairs could not get net so the owners on the 1st floor decided to call in comcast to redo the router so that person can get net. Now Im having problems getting net connection. Even though it says connection very good with 4 bars my net constantly disconnects every 5-10 mins or so and it auto signs on again. Funny thing is that when I do a hard shut down to my comp and reboot it logs me onto the net fine but if I do a restart it doesnt work, also if I do a repair it doesnt work. I have a Netgear 802.11G USB and Im not sure what router they are running downstairs but Im thinking the generic comcast router. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on or what I should take a look at? I dont think it personally has to do with anything in the settings because I AM getting internet its just not stable for some odd reason.

Thanks

Nothing it coming to mind (but it is late, I'm going to bed after this post) but it is going to be difficult to troubleshoot without having access to the router settings or changing the routers location (location would be my best guess). Frankly, you should just complain to your landlord and make comcast fix your problem like they did the other tenants (maybe it will become his problem again :Q). They might just have to put in a second AP.

If the router is a LinkSys wcg200-cc the piecer will reset itself everytime you start streaming video/music or anything really. That's the router Comcast was giving out. It's just junk I think, well my experience with it anyway. Sometimes when it resets it will reset all the settings also. Ethernet and USB works fine with it. It only does it when I get a lot of traffic going with a wireless connection.

Other people would have the same problem as you're having if that's the case. If they don't then it's probably a range issue but who knows. It does say you have a good connection going. You might try "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" next time it quits on ya. The repair deal probably does that anyways.

Maybe that will give you some ideas anyway.

Hm this router LinkSys wcg200-cc, when did Comcast start issueing these? They just came to fix this thing several days ago.

To kidcool: They being comcast? I doubt they'll do something like that without a price tag attached to it

To sleep: you mean go into windows dos and just type in ipconfig/release? and then ipconfig/renew?

well the linksys gateways comcast used to use were pretty rock solid, but i did notice people running into dead spots in their house, either from different material in the house or distance. One thing they started suggesting and using at points for dead spots was the netgear powerline adapters. Yeah it's a hardwire but you are guarenteed a solid connection. You can usually find them cheap from compusa or microcenter.

I'm not sure exactly when they started using the router. I can't find any firmware updates anywhere for it. It doesn't seem like anyone else can either. Yeah, at a command prompt do it. I'm pretty sure the little repair option they have when you right-click your adapter does that same thing and flushes the dns. So I don't know if it would actually help after the router poops out. If that's even the same problem as I have to deal with.

I know Comcast sent up a techie 4ish months ago and replaced the router and this one (same brand and model) does exactly the same thing as the last one. Resets itself or "freezes" until you actually go back and flip the switch. Everything else checked out fine and it only does it when there is a lot of wireless traffic.

I'd go get a new one but the router is next to my computer(s) and my roomie is stuck with the wireless connection and is usually home when I'm in class and asleep when I'm back, har har! Still a pain in the ass though.

This netgear powerline adapter, wouldnt I have to run a line from the 1st floor to the 3rd? I dont have the luxury of doing that if thats what I understood from your statement.

To sleep: Yea they sent up a tech like last fri and they replaced it. 1st floor is doing fine they said, dunno anything about 2nd floor. Mostly everyone in this building are professionals so they dont do any dling, just reg net surfing so I dont think its caused by the network jamming.
