for some reason part of my lawn keeps staying yellow, it never turns green no matter how much i water it. my sprinkler is set to water every other day because if iwater everyday, i waste money on water bill. any tips on how to turn it green

What type of grass is it? i.e. Bermuda grass will turn and stay yellow during the fall/winter.

sorry i don't know what kind of grass is it because i was not the one that did this. it was already there when we moved into the house , and sorry for the newb question, how would i get nitrogen on the lawn

Go down to your local lawn & garden center.

Bring a sample of the grass that you have that is yellow and also some that is green.

They will be able to set you up with the proper fertilizer, etc. You may pay a few extra $$, but the knowledge that you will get is invaluable.

Note that I recommended a local lawn/garden, not a Home Depot, WalMart, Sears type place.

what area of the country?

just go to the local HD or Lowes and get the appropriate seasonal fertilizer.

You need to know the type of grass.
It's normal for grass to yellow in winter. Fertilizing it will keep it green, if it isn't Bermuda grass. But, it will require mowing more often.
Watering every other day is fine in the summer (depending on where you are) but may be too much in the winter. You want too water it enough to get the roots to grow deep.
Are any animals relieving themselves on the yellow patch?

well i live in california, and the grass has been yellow since summer, how often should i water in teh winter and how long should i water. i have tried fertilizer but it didn't help much, maybe i am doing it wrong??

Our lawn is just now finally beginning to turn back to green, now that we had rain.

There wasn't a hint of green in our lawn around august.

You need to go to a local garden center, they know what the soil is like where you live and can tell you which soil ammendments to add and how much to water. The general rule with water is 1" of water per week. Water deeply less often instead of shallowly more often. For most people, it's no more than once or twice a week. This gets the grass to grow roots deeply and the grass is more healthy. Shallow roots result in grass that is fragile and dies easily.
