Need some laptop troubleshooting done!

I was given a Presario 700 laptop. It appears it may have been dropped by the looks of the outer cover. It came with no AC adapter.
I got it home, plugged the kids' AC adapter into it (she's got a similar Compaq) & the light came on showing it was plugged into power.
I pushed the on/off switch & the "on" light came on, however, I heard no disk noise, saw no display & nothing happened when I pushed the eject button on the optical drive.
I know nothing about laptops (yet). Where do I start? hehehe
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried watering it? Sometimes if computers aren't watered for a while they can "go bad" and almost die.

I'm joking (obviously), you don't pour water on your laptops. Try taking a paper clip, straighten it out, and poke it through the small hole on the optical drive, maybe there is a disc jammed in there.

Then I would let it charge for a bit, and while it was charging, I would google the symptoms to see what others say.

With no reaction to the A/C power, my guess is that it might well have been dropped - and that could have loosend the CPU seating and/or RAM seating. Either of those conditions would produce the light on but no action. If the BIOS can't act, the optical drive won't work either.

Sounds like you may have to take it to someone who can remove the keyboard and check all those things.
