There is a local private Christian school that is looking for evening computer, network mantenace work PT. I am interested in the position and have applied, but am unsure about what to answer when it comes to the religion questions. They do cleary state in the job description "Have an deep interest and understanding of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and the teachings of a Christian life".

I went to a private Christian school for grades 1-6, and do keep up with discussion about religion, but more of philosophical/academic standpoint ever since I started college. My girlfriend attends Mass every Sunday. Because of her beleifs, I made myself familiar with Catholic beleifs. So while not an expert, I am willing to say that I have understanding of the beleif system as a whole. But the other questions on the employment application are very religion specific
1. do you believe in the Christian concept of God -yes for me
2. Do you beleive Jesus died for our sins and is our savior -He might have been a martyr, but I do not beleive in immaculate conception, he was the Son of God.
3. How does your relationship with Jesus Christ affect your everyday work? - he doesn't really. I beleive his teachings should be innate within people, don't kill your neighbors, don't lie, don't steal, etc. because they are evil, not because someone said they are evil. To me, he was just a guy who put it to "rules" and somehow got credit for it.

Would I be out of line to embellish my answers to closer match what they would want to hear just like any other interview? Or because it is about religion, I should be as honest as possible?

Cliffs:
Want a PT night time position to at a Christian private school. Should I lie about religous beliefs to closer match what they are listening?

The correct answers for you would then be.

1. NO

2. NO

3. It doesn't.

Any you might not get the job. But at least you won't be hiding something that could come back to bite you. They are a private organization so they can be picky like that.

This is a call only you can make. It could well be that you're more christian than other people working there already, or maybe not and you'd stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe you're the best guy for the job, and they'd be better off with you than the next guy who was born again but doesn't know TCP from PHP.

Is there some reason that discrimination laws don't apply here? Obviously they would want Christians to work there, but I would have thought they are prohibited from asking those sorts of questions.

http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/qanda.html

I. What Are the Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination?

* Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin;
* the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination;
* the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older;
* Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments;
* Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government; and
* the Civil Rights Act of 1991, which, among other things, provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination.

Im pretty sure that the * Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; could not apply becuase it is a PRIVATE school. The rules get funny with private schools. But I could be wrong.

You know, I thought so too, but all the paperwork I have states that they will not discriminate against race, sex, color, or national origin, leaving out Religion enitrely. I am thinking it is something to do with a privately funded and operated school, and because they clearly state so, then perhaps then it is ok?

They can't discriminate based on religion. If they can, you can also feed them to the lions.

Because somebody not affiliated with that religion is not qualified for the job.

There's instances where you can discriminate because of age, religion, etc.

Be truthful, but then when they cast you aside tell them they are going against Jesus by being judgmental.
