I was making some upgrades to my computer and when I finished this is what happened. After turning it on I went into the bios screen to monitor cpu temp and while watching it for about 10 seconds (CPU up to 28C) the screen just frooze. I thought i smelled something funny so i just turned it off. I then checked everything and powered it on again but this time the nothing would post on my monitor, videocard fan and cpu fan were running.
My MB is a ALBATRON KX18D NForce Ultra 400 and CPU is +2600 Athlon XP Mobile and these were the changes I made:
1. Removed heatsink and reapplied Artic Silver grease
2. changed Sparkle 300 PS to a Rosewill 550
3. changed Crucial 512mb PC2700 to a PQI 512mb PC3200 stick
4. changed Maxtor 40 GB to a Maxtor 160 GB Harddrive
5. changed CD burner out with new Lite-on DVD burner

Now after this happened I took everything back apart, I didnt see any burn marks on the MB or CPU, also the CPU had good contact with the HS/Fan from the impression on it. I even retried with all the old parts but nothing. This MB is also suppose to have a termal protection for the CPU to shutdown if it gets to hot. So my question is do you think my MB, CPU or both went bad?

I would guess the power supply. I have a dead one that did the same thing. Just some generic one that came in my friend's case. It went in the first week after I built his computer. Try putting the other power supply back in.. then at least you can see if that's the problem.

I already tried it with the orginal Sparkle PS I had in it before but nothing but fans and lights would come on.

Yes I have tried it with all the parts I originally had in it but nothing. I don't mind buying a new MB but i would hate to get another socket A and find out the CPU was bad to.

Ok guys guys give me your opinion on above, should I:

1. buy a new socket A MB
2. buy a new XP mobile cpu
3. scrap it all and get a new MB and an A64 cpu

Thanks for your help

If it was the memory it would just beep before it POSTs... and if you ruled out the PSU then it has to be the motherboard or cpu.

If you smelled burning I would GUESS it's the motherboard. If you can find a website with a good return policy where you can return it no questions within a week or so, you could try a new motherboard risk free.

Does your hard drive sound like its booting up and running? I had a problem with my friends computer and it was his graphics card. That could be another thing, if you smelled taiwan then something is dead thats for sure.
