need some information on how to setup a firewall box between my modem and router

I have a cable modem and a wireless router. I'd like to set up a firewall computer between them, so that I don't have to set it up on each computer on my home lan. I'd also like to set up an antivirus system on it if possible. I don't know exactly how that'd work, if the server would scan each computer on the system, but whatever.

So. I'm somewhat familiar with Linux (mostly Red Hat), and very familiar with Windows. I'm willing to learn other systems such as FreeBSD if I need to. How can I make this system work? What operating system should I use? What software should I use? Obviously there's no one perfect solution, but let me hear what's worked for you.

Cliff's: I'm tired of configuring antivirus and firewall software on each computer on my home lan. I want to put in a computer between the cable modem and router to fix that. what should I do?

your router doesnt ahve a firewall in it? if it does, use that.

leave AV on each machine to inspect incoming(and outgoing) files.
