I've got a 6800GT that I've had for several years now, and starting today my screen went blank for no particularly good reason in windows. When I rebooted, at the POST screen all the text is readable but there are a series of white dotted lines that go across the entire screen. These lines turn into about 4-5 bands of white dots during the windows loading screen. When loading is finished the screen again goes blank and never recovers, forcing a reboot.

In safe mode and without NVIDIA drivers installed, windows functions normally and there are no white lines present. (they persist at the POST screen though). I have reinstalled drivers and windows with no effect.

It seems to me like I might have some bad memory on my card now but I am wondering why that would only manifest itself during POST, and not while in windows safe mode or without drivers installed? I don't have a spare video card to throw in there, and so I am wondering if anyone has any experience or ideas... because I'd rather not start replacing things I don't need to.

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: Might have wanted to put this in tech support. A little late now though I guess... doh.

Your card is going bad. My Geforce FX5900 i had back in the day started exhibiting the same symptoms as yours. I started getting those white dots all over in the Bios and loading screen and would get blank screens and rebooting while the drivers were installed. I even wasted time buying a 'better' power supply which did not fix the problem. I RMA'd it and the new one worked fine.

have you tried cleaning out any dust from around the 6800's HSF unit? overheating will cause those symptoms.
