posten in general hardware but thought id get a better responce here. mod please delete the one in general hardware thanks.

so i got civ 4 today for birthday and tried to install it. after i installed it before restarting i updated DAP (that download accelerator plus thing). i restarted and tried to play it and my comp froze. i restarted and tried it again but this time before it froze i ended the process. after that i downloaded McAfee because my university requires it. i scaned the comp and no virii came up. a little bit after the scan my comp randomly restarted. when igot back into windows half of the things i have set to run at startup dont. when i click on some files it says i need a cd in my drive. even for apps like spybot S&D. i can open IE but when i do, before the page loads, i get a thing sayen microsoft office needs to initalize. it starts to initalize and stops halfway through saying there isnt enough space (it says i have 0kb free). when i put a disk in the drive my apps will work. (i get a message saying its not the correct disk but when i close it it works) whe there is no disk in the drive it wont let me open certain apps. WHAT IS GOING ON. this is a vary confusing problem.

short version
-comp restarted on its own
-half of apps set to run at start dont
-M$ office tries to "initalize" at startup and every time i open a new IE window but cant
-some apps say i need a cd in the drive to run (like AdAware) others run fine
-when i put any cd in the apps that need it work
-no virii detected and spyware cleaned

UPDATE
-now i get a little message when trying to open itunes
"Unhandled Exception Error Number: 0x80040707 Description: Dll function call crashed: ISRT.VerGetFileVersion Setup will now terminate"

-windows restore (didnt think of that for a while) seemed to fix it but what the hell went wrong? and how can i prevent it from happening again?

hi there. these are things i would do if it were my system:

- get rid of "download accelerator". such apps don't greatly benefit download speeds in my experience. if you really think you need one, maybe your provider just sucks.

- McAfee... can you say "bloatware"? sucks that your school requires it, but oh well. that can be overlooked for now.

- keep the apps loading @ startup to a minimal. actually, list them - i'm willing to bet that some are unnecessary or can be ran on a need-be basis.

- do a full install of Office. that way you won't be prompted for the CD.

- you get prompted for a CD when you run Adaware and Spybot?! that's just wacky.

my basic recommendation to you would be to nuke everything and start from scratch. it sounds like you have a little bit of a convoluted mess of a system. at the very least, keep your background / startup apps to a minimum. best of luck.

I had a full install & still had problems with wanting the CD.
I quit getting the prompts after I updated "Windows Installer" to the latest edition.
