Alright. I'm scratching my head a bit at this one because I've never personally seen anything like it done, but I'm sure it can be. One of my many clients wanted to know if I knew anyone who did sign lighting. I was a little confused as to what he meant at first, but he basically explained it as wanting to put a light on the INSIDE of his back window (which is HEAVILY tinted, I'd suggest 7-10 range, not quite limo 5 but close) that could be triggered to turn on. It'd need to be bright as hell and fluorescent probably won't work because it takes too long to heat up and turn on and would likely just burn the tint.

It took me a while to get the true intent out of the guy because I wanted to know what he wanted it for, like a business sign, etc.. specifically because I was hoping he wasn't intending to do something stupid with red/blue that would get his ass jailed on felony police impersonation charges. Turns out he's just a super aggressive driver, and in our state (and I'm sure many others) it's illegal to have any signing such as vinyl's, lights, etc, on your vehicle that are obscene in nature - and he wanted to get around this on a loophole technicality. Get this, the guy wants to have a blue sign that spans the ENTIRE back window, on the right side a picture of a middle finger (<^> anyone?) and on the left the simple words "FUCK YOU!".

After I finally got the reason out of him, I found it both juvenile, but somewhat hilarious. It got me thinking, though, not for his intent, but for his application.. what exactly could one do to do messages like this? I was initially thinking something like a programmable LED board would be fun as hell because you could program things like, "BACK OFF" and flash it at people tailgating you, etc.. would just be something to dick around with. Has anyone experienced any applications (programmable or not, I'm simply curious on my own now) that would not impede visual on the rear window (so no back boards preferably) and would be bright enough to illuminate through tint, perhaps even during the daytime?

This is all just brainstorming for giggles so go with me on it, it's pointless to discuss the moral or legal ramifications of something that isn't going to happen anyway, I'm simply curious from a technical standpoint (inside only, non visually impeding, bright, possibly programmable) of if this application exists.

i've thought of this before... a message board at the back for alerting other drivers of something wrong with their car, or thanking them if they let you merge, or saying F you if they cut you off :D

I'm honestly thinking it would be amazing to do something programmable; either on the fly or with presets (or both!). Would be hilarious to have a little controller and be able to hit 1 and have it say "SLOW DOWN JACKASS", or 2 and have it say "You have a headlight out". I've been given some suggestions by the amazing Rubycon and am trying to do some research. This is probably an expensive proposition, but I think it would be very fun to do.

Wasn't there a top gear episode where they put one of those scrolling signs in the back of a car? And Clarkson would type out funny messages while sitting in the back seat? :p

Never saw it, hah. I want something transparent though as to not kill your ability to see out the rear window. But man that would make for a great night. Driving around town with some guys in the car.. you see some absolute bombshell drive by and you patter away, get in front of her and type something silly like giving her your number to text you, complimenting her by saying you'd like to shake her dads hand, whatever. Possibilities are endless.

the whole transparent part may not be doable. any amount of light that will be bright enough to get thru tint on a sunny day is likely to wash out any detail, and may be too bright to deal with inside the car. i love the idea tho, hehe. and really, black out the whole window and get a rear cam hooked into a mirror monitor. my friends custom shop does this for lots of SUVs here in az. you get the same visibility, from what ive seen.

Ruby recommended LISA plastics with royal blue LED emitters (kinda expensive) and of course OLED's (super expensive). I'm trying to locate a vendor who can custom fabricate either but am coming up with dead ends in the consumer area, just high end corporate facilities..

Looks pretty easy to bend.
Then again you could make your own out of Crees and the sky would be the limit. ;)
