Alright. I'm scratching my head a bit at this one because I've never personally seen anything like it done, but I'm sure it can be. One of my many clients wanted to know if I knew anyone who did sign lighting. I was a little confused as to what he meant at first, but he basically explained it as wanting to put a light on the INSIDE of his back window (which is HEAVILY tinted, I'd suggest 7-10 range, not quite limo 5 but close) that could be triggered to turn on. It'd need to be bright as hell and fluorescent probably won't work because it takes too long to heat up and turn on and would likely just burn the tint.
It took me a while to get the true intent out of the guy because I wanted to know what he wanted it for, like a business sign, etc.. specifically because I was hoping he wasn't intending to do something stupid with red/blue that would get his ass jailed on felony police impersonation charges. Turns out he's just a super aggressive driver, and in our state (and I'm sure many others) it's illegal to have any signing such as vinyl's, lights, etc, on your vehicle that are obscene in nature - and he wanted to get around this on a loophole technicality. Get this, the guy wants to have a blue sign that spans the ENTIRE back window, on the right side a picture of a middle finger (<^> anyone?) and on the left the simple words "FUCK YOU!".
After I finally got the reason out of him, I found it both juvenile, but somewhat hilarious. It got me thinking, though, not for his intent, but for his application.. what exactly could one do to do messages like this? I was initially thinking something like a programmable LED board would be fun as hell because you could program things like, "BACK OFF" and flash it at people tailgating you, etc.. would just be something to dick around with. Has anyone experienced any applications (programmable or not, I'm simply curious on my own now) that would not impede visual on the rear window (so no back boards preferably) and would be bright enough to illuminate through tint, perhaps even during the daytime?
This is all just brainstorming for giggles so go with me on it, it's pointless to discuss the moral or legal ramifications of something that isn't going to happen anyway, I'm simply curious from a technical standpoint (inside only, non visually impeding, bright, possibly programmable) of if this application exists.
