A friend of mine is having some trouble setting up a shared network with his dsl, and I just wanted to see if anyone has some ideas. I talked to him on the phone, and this is the setup he tells me he has.

Instead of the traditional setup which has the line from the wall to a dsl modem to the computer, he says that his goes directly into the computer. He said from there it splits itself and has an ethernet and a regular phone line connection. I've never seen a setup like this, but he said they got dsl in the early days, 4 years ago or so.

Now he would like to hook his dsl connection through a router, so that he can share the connection with other computers. Is this possible with this type of setup? If you have any ideas or experience with something like this, please let me know.

He could use Internet Connection Sharing and plug his ethernet into a switch along with the rest of the network, but that means leaving the DSL-connected computer on whenever others want to go online.

It would be necessary to know how the computer is configured to be able to figure out what he's seeing. My guess is the DSL modem is on the pole or somewhere outside of his control. If so, I can't see why you can't configure a broadband router to connect. Without more details, it's pretty difficult to say...

I'd certainly look into the possibility of using a broadband router before tinkering with ICS.
