need some help with my parents' pc

My parents' pc has been giving them an issue quite like nothing I've never seen before. Windows doesn't start normally, rather it checks the disk which says may take a long time (even though it only checks it for less than a minute), then it offers me to send the problem report to MS, and then it tells me to contact the computer manufacturer for further info. Then I can click finish and the pc cuts off.

What the hell is wrong? It was working perfectly fine last night, and then when it was up from standby it started doing this.

I would start by backing up their data using a boot disk like Symantec Ghost, Linux Live or BartPE then test the hard drive to see if it's bad or going bad.

is this disk checking done in a windows or dos looking screen. Does the disk checking have a name such as CHKDSK or is it the startup up repair utility thats doing running? try tapping F8 after the bios check and see if you can boot to safe mode.

Did you run error check? Right-click C\properties\tools\error checking. Click "check now". Check both options\start. It cannot run until you reboot. Takes awhile depending on the size of your HDD. This will find and hopefully fix any errors it detects.

It says the root cause was a patch after I checked the error report. What does that mean?

Anyways, It's in windows and it's the startup utility repair.

I'll try safe mode.
