Need some help with Memtest!

I'm trying to troubleshoot some issues my machine is having (i've posted in other threads). Some advice I got was to run Memtest, so I downloaded the latest version, created the boot floppy, and started running it last night.

After an hour and a half, it was still running. Is that normal? Here's what it was saying:

- 74% passed
- it was on Test 7
- It had found 205303 errors

How long does it take to run? Is it normal for it to take two hours to fully run? Did I end it too soon (had to go to bed)? Does it give me an output analysis I can understand? I'm a bit confused by the high number of errors it found, and the fact that it says things are still "passing."

Hope you can help!

yeah, it's normal. longer it takes the better. it's running a test on your memory. if it found errors, then toss your ram. problem solved. :)

Memtest is mainly used as a pass/fail test. If there are no errors, having run it overnight, that is a pass. if there is even one error, that is a fail.

In case of failure, your power supply may be at failt, or you may have overclocked the RAM too much, or it may need more voltage (VDIMM) or it may not be compatible with the motherboard, or it may be a faulty RAM.

There are additional tests you can run to figure out which one it is.

If you got errors you need to either change some setting or replace some memory. RAM settings can be found in your bios setup (press del at boot). Either adjust your memory timings to slower settings (3T is slower than 2T) or reduce the clock speed of the memory (FSB). Run memtest again after adjustments and hopefully the problem will be resolved.
