hello there,
I know that probalby 99% of all topics in here are about the same thing. But I've looked through all what I could find on this forum and yes I did find plenty of nice advises but my network still doesn't work. Alright, here is what I have:
Two comps with win98 se on them, two nic's, both d-link (dfe 530tx+). I can go to the net through my cable modem so nic's are alright. Netbios is off, so is dns, wins and no gateway. I have tcp/ip and controllers installed. I do have client for microsoft networks as well. I have file and printer sharing but thats not the case since I can't even see computers or ping them. In the network neighbourhood i can see only myself. Groups are the same, names less than 14 characters and no special sign no space no nothing.
Right now I have automatic IP assigning on both of them, but i am not sure if that the way how it works. I saw somewhere that they (home network computers) suppose to have range in 192.168.*.*, is that so? do I have to give each of them IP manually?
Any advice or help will surely be appreciated,

...my brains just can't take it anymore...

something needs to specify IP address, subnet mask and gateway for your PCs. That something could be you or it could be your service provider or it could be a home router.

Please tell us your IP addresses by clicking start/run and typing winipcfg. run this little program and read off the three sets of numbers (IP addresses and what not)

let's start there considering you can't ping

OH, computer names are unique correct?

spidey07, actually after I read your post I thought its going to be easy for me :) I mean that one post with the title something like 'why is that everybody keeps on having troubles with microsoft network???' Unfortunately I was wrong :(

Anyway, parameters from one computer:
ip address: 24.92.23.32
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 24.92.23.1

for another computer is it:
ip address: 24.92.23.129
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 24.92.23.1

Gateways are the same probably because we're "sharing" one cable modem by plugging it in in different computers. I'am not exactly sure why ip's are different..
computer names are different, groups are the same

The best do what Spidey suggested.

If it still does not go.

Install the NetBEUI protocol (NetBEUI does not need the internal IP numbers).

NetBEUI ? BIND to NIC, and Default Protocol.

TCP/IP ? Bind to NIC (uncheck Default Protocol).

File sharing, and Printer Sharing, Bind to NetBEUI only.

To see the other computer you need to share correctly.

Make sure that you log on as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing:

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. The Protocol that you are using for sharing, in the properties of the protocol it has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked.

2. The general File and Print Sharing have to checked.

3. In My Computer, individual Drive or/and printer has to be checked for sharing.

Well guys, I did as you told me to, I mean almost step by step, actually step by step, precisely, and yet I can not ping, other machine, can not see it, especially can not access it... I'll probably try something else, I'll try some other OSes. (linux :)) I guess it's going have to be my own fight, unless of cause you have some more suggestions, in any way I'd be most delighted to hear a word from you.
Best Regard,

You can still access the internet? very strange.

Not running any firewall software are we?

last step, give us the output of <route print> from a command prompt.

How your network is connected, Hub? Switch? Router? something else?
