Need some help with buying a Wii

My son wants a Wii badly after playing one at a friend's house. He played Rock Band and Super Smash Bros. and liked them a lot. Problem is, I know nothing about the Wii. What should I buy, how many controllers, whats the nunchuck, etc?

He beat Rock Band, so I can't imagine buying that game now, and with Rock Band 2 coming out, I'll probably just grab that one when it does (even though I think that comes out *after* christmas, right?). I figure the instruments from RB2 will be backwards compatible to RB1 and if he really wants RB1, I'll get the copy without the instruments. My wife liked the Wii Fit that her friend showed her, so she wants that. I've got smaller kids too (6 and 3) and they might be interested in some kiddie games...

Either way, I'm completely lost and have no idea what I'm buying and was wondering if someone here with some good Wii knowledge could point me in the best direction.

Right now, I'd either be hooking it up to the analog 32" 4:3 TV upstairs in the game room (which is dying a slow death) or the 50" Plasma downstairs in main room. It's not 1080p though-- does that make a big difference with Wii?

Thanks in advance!

Buy the Wii component cable from monoprice.com
Wii has max resolution of 480p, just get the cable I linked and hook it up to any TV w/ component input and you're set.

I was just at Target the other day and surprised to found they came out w/ a new official nintendo controllers bundle. It comes w/ the wii remote, nunchuk, and wii wheel.

If you don't live in NY, it's a good idea to do all your Wii console, controllers, and game shopping at Amazon.com 'cause they don't charge tax or shipping, and consistently have the best price.

Wow, it's in stock. OP, buy it now, might not get many chances if you're expecting to surprise your son with it. This is only the fifth time I've ever seen a Wii in stock. Twice about a year and a half ago. Once in July of 2007 (when I bought one). Once last Friday when I was with a friend who was getting Gears 2 at WalMart. And now from this link.

I've been seeing more and more of them recently. With the dollar surging Nintendo shrewdly decided to give Americans more Wiis.

they are also quite plentiful at gamestop now. I suggest the OP just run there tomorrow and get them before all the vultures do come the holiday season.

No tax in most states plus free shipping....can't beat that....

.....unless you have amazon prime!

Thanks for all the advice! I'm purchasing that bundle at Amazon now. I'll likely wait on the games a little while though as I don't see those running short on stock. Dang, I never realized just how expensive this console could get... $300 for the Wii, 2nd controller, and nunchuk. $130 for the Fit for the wife. almost $200 for RB2... Wow.

Don't worry about other games for now. Wii Sports has infinite replay value for casual gamers. I have a bunch of other games (Mario Kart, SSB, Monster Truck) that I only played once. I found Wii fit the other day for my fiancee but that will be for Xmas.

Right there with you!!

About 2 months ago we decided we were getting a Wii for the kids for X-mas as well and I decided to start working on getting things then (to lessen the $$ burden as well as actually get what we needed).

Slowly but surely I have managed to get the console, component cables, 3 more remotes, 3 more nunchuks, 2 wheels, wii fit and several games.

We are all set now and should be blast to play as group. We had previously borrowed my brother in law's wii on several occasions and it was a big hit so I know it will go over.

Of course it still helps when your kids still believe there is s Santa Claus!!!

Enjoy and have fun.

Mario Galaxy

Also, some younger genre Gamecube games? Could introduce your kid to Zelda with the softer looking Wind Waker graphics.

Mario Kart

Mario Galaxy, and Mario Kart Wii are some must haves.

As far as Rock Band if he wants Rock Band 2 and wants Rock Band 1 its cheaper right now to buy the Rock Band 1 bundle and the Rock Band 2 game. The Rock Band 1 instruments work with Rock Band 2 and have been discounted to $99 for the bundle. Buying the bundle and Rock Band 2 separate you will save about $30 to $40 (The Rock Band 2 bundle will be $189.99 when its released).
