Need some help with an iPAQ 2210 + 1Gb SD card

Hi all,

So I bought a 1Gb SD card for my iPAQ 2210 to go alongside my 256Mb CF card; because I use a GPS system with my iPAQ, 100Mb of maps leaves me little to no room left for Family Guy episodes, MP3s etc ;)

The card works okay up to a point, but if I turn the device off or reset it while it's doing anything remotely connected to the SD card (such as copying a file, playing an MP3), on startup the iPAQ will just freeze. You can see the Windows Mobile default screen, but nothing works. If you take the card out and soft-reset, when you plug the card back in, you get the animated four-colour "working" graphic appear on the screen, indefinitely.

I downloaded Storage Tools and Flash Format, both of which hang if the card is inserted while they're running, but this appears to be the only way to get either of them to be able to do anything sensible with either of the cards if problems occur. About once in five times, they won't lockup, and I can run a Repair on the card or, as a last resort, a full Format. However, I've formatted the SD card three times now over the last 24 hours, and I'm beginning to get fed up.

While I realise that you really shouldn't turn the iPAQ off while writing to a card or similar, I've never had this problem with my CF card; it's a Lexar and has been totally reliable, unlike this Integral card.

Maybe it's just me, or the fact that it's such a large card that it takes the iPAQ an extremely long time to mount it or do anything with it? I should mention that when the trouble starts, if I start File Explorer and drill down the filesystem into the card, as soon as it tries to read the card contents, it locks up. It appears that the CPU is being overworked, as iTask will eventually appear (after about five minutes), and general background usage is extremely slow.

Can anyone suggest anything? I'm on ROM 1.10, with all applicable updates installed, and I've performed a hard-reset twice now; copying 100Mb of maps over is becoming tiresome :)

Would a USB2 card reader be a better idea if this happens again? If the card becomes corrupted then it's extremely difficult to wipe it clean, or repair it, and I'm wondering if Windows would be able to sort it out better than my iPAQ. Also, with 300k/sec copy speeds (using the USB cradle), copying Family Guy episodes over is sending me to sleep!

Any suggestions welcome :)

[Edit] It just did it again while writing this :| - entering File Explorer shows the first two directories, and then it just stalls. There's a good five or so directories on the card. ARGHH!

Okay, so I had to format it again, but this time I changed to 4kb cluster sizes instead of 512b sizes to see if that helps matters- maybe it's a speed issue? I have noticed that it takes an extraordinarily long time to run a Storage Tools' Repair on the card, so here's hoping...

*Update*

No, it does the same thing with 8kb & 16kb clusters, always seems to be around the same point. Strange thing is, it'll work absolutely fine up until you take the card out and re-insert it (doesn't matter if the iPAQ's on or not), and then it starts acting up.

Faulty SD card? Returning it's not a problem as the company I bought it from has a no-quibble 30-day return policy, so I could just send it back and get another one.

Thoughts?

Yep, 1.10.

HP emailed me back to say that they've tested up to 512Mb and therefore verify that they will work. They say that higher-capacity cards may work but they don't guarantee it.

Sigh. I'm organising an RMA for return of this one and replacement with a 512Mb SD card instead.

768Mb should be enough for anyone.... right? ;)
