Need some help with a new a64 Winnie system

Here are some problems I've been having and the parts I think that are implicated. Any help solving them or shared experiences posted here are appreciated.

1. My news system is suffering from random crashes which I am unable to attribute to any one component. I have read similar complaints from people who also have ATI Radeon cards which suggests that there may be a compatibility problem with my ASUS 9600XT video card. The Catalyst VPU has kicked in at times when a game freezes. I recently removed the ATI Catalyst drivers and replaced them with the Omega ones.

2. The Corsair Value Ram CL 2.5 RAM I am running is also potentially implicated in this problem. It has been suggested that I run the memory in different slots or on their own but this seems only to be treating the symptom and not the disease. It also hasn?t made a difference in incidences of the sometimes odd behaviour of some functions within XP, the same copy of which I was running smoothly with Service Pack 2 installed on my old P4 2.4c. The system also randomly hangs or crashes during gaming or even word processing.

3. The Seagate S-ATA Hard Drive may also be the issue. As a solution, people with ASUS A8V boards have fooled their MB into thinking that it is an IDE drive by disabling the VIA controller and activating the PROMISE controller. My Abit AV8has no PROMISE controller.

Thanks,

MM

Air flow is good and the temps are normal..no problems there.

I'm now at the stage where I'm wanting to reinstall Windows. The problem now is getting the SATA drivers installed on the MOBO so Windows recognizes that I have a SATA drive. The floppy that came with the MOBO is useless and the latest drivers seem only to cause error messages when I'm inserting the disk during Windows setup (after pressing F6), stating "txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (512)..."

What is the difference between the Silicon 3112 driver and the 3114? Which should I be installing if I only have one SATA drive and no other drives (ie not RAID)?

What memory voltage are you using? If you left it on AUTO, then check what the mobo defaults to. Undervolted RAM won't do you any favors.

edit: I see you put that info in your signature. 2.65V isn't bad. Next thing I'd do is take out the SoundBlaster Live! and see if it fits in your trash can

Point well taken mechBgon. That may just be another headache brewing, if it isn't already.

I'm at the point of returning this Mobo and getting an ASUS. It's just too buggy. Any other considerations?
