The laptop in question is a Gateway ML6232. It isn't great, but I want to sell it - it should be worth something, since it is still fast enough for everyday use.

The issue? The keyboard connector is damaged. The keyboard itself works fine, as does everything else in the computer. The side of the keyboard connector broke off and I can't figure out how to secure the keyboard ribbon into the slot now. I also don't know how to apply pressure onto the ribbon so it makes good contact now, as the clip that holds it in place also broke off.

If you look at the left keyboard clip holder, you'll notice it broke off. I don't know how to attach the keyboard without it.

The "proper" repair for this would be to replace the motherboard, because any other option risks compounding the issue. However, if you really want to try, I would start with electrical tape. Do not use scotch tape, it can carry a static charge. The problem with electrical tape will be it's not as strong an adhesive as other kinds of tape, and even with a weaker adhesive you run the risk of lifting a resistor or two off the board if you are not careful.

One other possibility you might consider, is checking ebay for someone who has a liquid damaged unit like yours and is selling it for parts dirt cheap. If you are very careful about it, you might be able to take the locking lever off of the damaged board and put it on yours.

I use to work on gateway laptops at my old job. If you are technical enough and have a heat gun you might be able to do it yourself.

I am assuming that your laptop is past the warranty.

Make sure you have the extra part. You can check with a computer repair store to see if they have that in stock. You can also check the internet for a part number and purchase the individual connector from an electronic component store website.

Once you have the spare part you are going to turn on the heat gun and point it towards that connector. Move it side to side eve so slightly. Now with small pliers slowly try to see if it can come off. Don't force it off or you will rip the contacts on the motherboard. Once the piece gets hot enough you will notice it melting a little. That is when you slowly try to lift the connector off. If the connector is hot enough it should come out smoothly.

Once it's out remove the old solder. Once the board is cleaned. you are going to put the connector on and make sure all the pins are in the right area. You are going to solder one pin. Once that pin is soldered and everything is aligned, you will put some flux on the pins so when you resolder the pins they will not bridge or clump.

If the unit is under warranty have a professional do it.

Let me know how it goes.
