Electrical Engineers use imaginary numbers all the time. EE uses the letter j instead of i, as I is used for current. Never the less, j = i = sqrt(-1).

In simple terms, the imaginary term represents a phase change in the voltage or current.

As a cop out, I suppose you could report to your class that any one teaching Circuit Theory uses imaginary numbers (s/he is, after all, teaching EE). Job Title = Professor or Assoc. Professor. Job Description = ? (try google)

Other than the obvious jobs (math teachers), imaginary numbers don't have much real-life application in their pure form. You use them as a tool to get something else. For example, when looking for the solution to a differential equation, you might come up with imaginary roots that can lead to unique real-world solutions. So basically, engineers and scientists of all types probably have to break out the books every now and then.

Edited before the grammer nazis got here.
