hey all...
Ive tried searching the KDB at MS and didnt come up with anything. maybe im not searching correctly. anyway, so come to you guys for some help. i get frquent lock ups in win2k as of lately. everything just freezes. i have to hit the reset button in order for it to reboot and when it does, windows gives me an explorer has generated errors message and says that a log was being created. so i check in event viewer and theres these three error logs that seem to be consistent for a few days.theey are as follows...

Hmmm. The only time I've seen these messages was when the system was unplugged from the network. Can you tell us more about the environment in which this machine is used, and what you're using it for?

If the hardware is okay, you could kill all CGI processes to see if reinstatement would work. You could also remove IIS and TCP/IP, then reinstall TCP/IP and then reinstall IIS.

thanks for the reply..

its my home pc hooked up to the inet via cable connection. the net works great so im guesing that its plugged in, but i will double check when i get home. IIS was recently installed, but since i really dont use it i will uninstall it. it was more of a curiosity to install IIS. i will also try uninstalling TCP/IP and then reinstalling, that seems to work at times...i read on the net somewhere that it might have to do with netbios. so ill try uninstalling and reinstalling that. i dont see how these could just freeze the whole pc. if anyone else has any suggestions, please share :)

In this case you may just need to uninstall IIS. Depending on how it's configured, it's probably expecting to be running in quite a different environment from the one in which you are using it. You may not need to do anything at all with TCP/IP.

Well, if you look at the names of the event source (second line down on each) it looks like you have SMTP, w3(www?)svc, and FTP giving you those errors. AFAIK SMTP really doesn't need to be running as its more of a security hole than a help. Do you run an FTP server off your win 2000? Also, looking at the descriptions down below it sounds like the problem isn't the services, but the monitoring of each service thats causing the problems. Sounds like the admin tool is hanging all of these processes. Any ideas on what you set up that would error out like this? Might very well be IIS. Another security hole, unless you are up on all of the patches.

instead of uninstalling iis, you can just stop the services and see if the error messages stop.

like i said earlier, i installed IIS as a curiosity a few days ago, but i just uninstalled it./ maybe thats what it was, because it had ftp:// as well as http:// acces to my machine. so now its gone and we shall see if that fixes the errors and lockups. i cant stand working in photoshop and having it freeze in the middle of a project. grrr.

/me crosses fingers

thanx guys
