Need some help setting up a FTp here.....

I know this belongs to the Networking section but I would get faster response here. 😀

I've just downloaded a copy of GuildFTP and set up everything according to the help and ready to go but my friends can't connect to me. I know this has something to do with my router but I don't know how to go about it. Any ideas?? I'm on a Dlink 804 router. 🙂

Set up the router so that your machine is the DMZ one.

I'm new to all this. How do I do this?? 🙁

Also, do I need to have a static IP to host a FTP server??

1) Read the manual for the router
2) no, but it's nice to have

static DNS is fine, you don't need the static IP. theres a few places you can get free DNS clients to keep it pointing at the right IP

Find the manual and read how to setup port forwarding for your router and do so. Setting your computer up for being in the DMZ would also work but would expose it more than necessary so port forwarding would be prefered.

I've set my pc for DMZ and the manual said that I'm bypassing the firewall's protection. I see a port forwarding option in the router's option.

I've enabled DMZ and now it's accessible. 🙂 Time to do port forwarding.

Once you do, disable the dmz on that pc since it will no longer be necessary.

Alright.......I'm now at my routers menu(Static routing). A couple of question.

What's a subnet mask?? What should I leave it as?? 255.0.0.0??

What's a GAteway Ip Address?? My IP to where people should use to connect to me?? 🙂

Is Static routing = port forwarding??

Nope, static routing is not port forwarding. The only thing you should need to specify for port forwarding is the port numbers (ie: 21) and the internal ip address to forward them to (ie: 192.168.1.123)

Alright. I closed the DMZ and did not do anything else and others can still access my FTP. So much for adding anything extra. 😀

alright, last q. I just noticed that I don't have a static IP. So erm, how do I ensure that my friends will be able to log into my FTp without using the IP??
