Need some help on a KT7 RAID setup

Hey,I have just reived the harddrive for setting up RAID on my ABIT KT7 and before I plunge into it I thought Id ask a few basic ?'s considering this is the first time for me. (a RAID Virgin)

1.Do I use 1 ATA100 cable per drive or do I put both on 1 cable?

2.As far as I can tell I think I will be using RAID 0 for performance, I will not have anything on this machine the is data critical,RAID 1 seems to be more for data protection I may try that later,Is the a big difference in proformance between the two?

3.Once I get everything hooked up do I follow the same basics (partition,Format and then load windows) or is it done differently

4.This is probaly something I should of asked before I bought the second drive but, is the performance worth the troulbe or is it more used in data backup?

5.I am using 2 IBM 75gig 7200 ATA100 drives and Like I stated above an ABIT KT7 mobo,So if there is anything else that you might think of that I need to know that I didnt ask dont be shy any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance,And I am sure I will have more ?'s before it is over but this I think will get me started

Ive built a number of raid systems.. the IDE raid with HTP 370 was the fastest one yet with a couple GXP 75 running on it.. its mega fast on bursts.. but for everyday usage you prolly wont see a whole lot of difference.. is mostly a benchmarkers paradise.

1. One drive on each channel. Both setup as Master..use the 80 Pin cables.
2. Raid 0 gives fastest performance as it only has to copy to one set of drives.. mirroring has to copy to two sets of drives.
3. Yes, once you configure the array in the Raid controller bios, just fdisk and format as usual..if you install win2k you will need to install the raid drivers during the beginning of the install..have a driver disk ready.
4. You need a minimum of 2 drives for raid 0, 4 for 0+1 They will allow 2 times the smallest drive for the size of the array
5. Just read the Manual, its pretty good.. if you have any questions email or PM me and Ill be glad to assist.. 🙂
