Need some help on a $300 build

I don't want to go Dell, I building for a friend and even if I was to go with Dell or something he will still come to me anytime he needs help with the machine.

I am looking for a nice barebone kit for about $300 or so, he also has a video card from his other machine to be transfrered to this build, it's old and crappy and PCI, if you can come up with something including a new video card and still keep it in the $300 range then great.

I already have the OS, so that's not needed.

Sempron64 2600+ socket 754 $64

Biostar geforce 6100 mATX $59.99

Corsair value 512mb ddr sdram $40

Seagate Barracuda 80gb SATA $59

Apex PC-115 w/350W PS$24

Grand total with shipping to my house (tampa fl): $301.28

Granted, this is all from newegg. You could shop it and get some better prices probably. You'll be using onboard graphics (which the 6100 is pretty good, and can't be much worse than whatever pci card he has to use). I'd just tell your friend to save up $120 and get a 6600gt to throw in there to round it out.

crap...forgot to put in an optical drive...NEC dvd burner$38.99

New grand total: $346.77

Again...I'd shop it a bit. It's a good starting point though

Get a dell there is no way you will get a better deal plus with most of their offers they throw in monitors. Plus they throw in warranties (spelling?) which you can't offer as well as tech support becuase every time some goes wrong with the puter you are gunna get a phone call.

I guess you didn't read my original post, like I said he will come to me with problems even if he does go with Dell. I also think you can get a better machine for the same price as a Dell if you already have the OS it's well worth it not to go with Dell.

So next time please read.

I did read but you are wrong. Its easy enough to find dell cupons and I'm sure in your equations you didn't factor in monitor.

He already has a monitor, and even with coupons you can still manage better deals then Dell if you have an OS already.

And how am I wrong??

I'd go with mezrah's suggestions; the components are all okay, and the price is pretty good for what you're getting.

I only wish we had the US pricing for computer equipment over here in the UK 🙁

DO NOT go with that first post, sorry but your friend will be wasting 300 dollars.

Either get a Dell (or eMachines, HP)

Or save up 200 more dollars and ask for suggestions when you have the money.

rofl, yeah ok. a waste???

it's not for me so why would I ask for suggestions when I have the money??

I would never buy eMachines products, Dell for that price sells you crap, and HP are a bit out of his price range.

I think the way to go is the first post, thanks for your suggestions, but I will stick with building it.

That's $191 (including shipping), leaving just over $100 for ram and a hdd. I'm sure you can find 512mb of value ram and a hard drive for that.

and an optical drive...that is a nice mobo and case though. either way, still about the same price as the one i did. the basics are up to you....white case, black case, integrated video, pci video...it's going to be a basic system no matter what, just a matter of preferences.

Whenever something is under $500 people here always say to buy a dell or emachines or blah blah blah. My family and friends don't know enough to call those companies in a problem anyway...they always call me. And when it comes to troubleshooting, I like to know what exactly is in the system. You only get that with one your build yourself.

MaximumPC just did an article last month on building a $300 PC. I think they ended up spending $310, but the specs weren't all that bad considering how cheap it was. I'll see if I can find the specs they used for it.

Ah good catch on the optical drive . . . I read he had another system he was pulling the vid card from so I assumed he could salvage that as well.
