Need some help from AT people in the Detroit area.

GoingUp

Lifer
I will be moving out to the Detroit area soon to start work at Daimler in Auburn hills. Where do you recommend is a good place to get an apartment or condo? I also will be going to grad school at night but I havent had a chance to apply anywhere yet. Can anyone make me some recommendations on where a good place to live would be?

Edit: I would appreciate any advice given to me about how bad traffic is, areas to avoid etc. Please also tell me how long it would take to get to a Pistons game from where you recommnded (pistons play next to my work)

lol, K-Zoo!? Don't kill him off so fast...

Gobadgrs, depending on where you're looking to take classes, the nicer areas will be Troy, Rochester, Birmingham, parts of Royal Oak, Bloomfield...but that all depends on your budget as well. In a 10 mile radius you will go from average housing to places in some of the richest neighborhoods of America. I've lived here all my life, as have some others here on this forum, feel free to PM me and we can chat on AIM or something.

Welcome 🙂

I'd go royal oak...couple a decent little shops/ theaters/ cd stores etc, and I think they're getting some money from the cool cities project to invest in downtown multi-use housing... just steer clear of noir leather (unless you're into that kinda thing)

troy, rochester, birmingham, and bloomfield are nice "family" areas (mostly), but a little dry on the social/urban life thing

edit: traffic: in royal oak you can hop on 75 pretty easy, which will take you right to auburn hills. traffic will be time dependent, rush hour might tak you upwards of 45 min to get there, 20 or so if you've got clear roads.

It's hard to diagnose where you shoud live in that area if you don't give us an expected budget. There are some pretty expensive areas right in the vicinity.

I would recomend living on a city right on 75 anywhere from Warren to Auburn Hills.

PS. I grew up in Troy.

Stay the h*ll away from Flint. I go to school there and it is SCARY.

Grand Blanc is pretty nice, and I have a friend who lives in Lake Orion and he seems to like it pretty well 🙂

im 24 and single. im lookin for a nice place to live where i can be around younger adults my age. id like to buy a small place or a condo and not waste my money on rent. any suggestions?

Edit: If I were to buy it would be 150K and under.

i think in troy there are some new condos being built. troy is a little pricer but the real estate will go up in value.

As someone else said, Royal Oak is pretty good for that. Decent little strip with bars and the like on it, and a cool, kinda chill hang out spot. Most folks around there are between 21-30. Not a huge "party" area, but you won't find too much of that around there. I hear Pontiac has some good clubs, but I've never been down that way, plus you kind of have to watch where you stay over there - some areas are OK, others not so much. Oh, and the Windsor border is not far from that area either - kind of fun to go down there every once in a while for a change of pace.

I haven't been around there in a while though, as I moved away from that area a few years back.

Oh yea, and the Woodward Dream Cruise goes right by / through Royal Oak and Birmingham every year in August, if that's your thing 😀. Even if it isn't your interest, it's a fun time to just go and hang out.

pontiac is definately more of a party spot, and probably cheaper than Royal oak, but you can expect more traffic headaches in that area. also not nearly as nice a place. Not sure on condo availability/pricing, but I know they've been trying to attract young professionals to royal oak for the past few years. If I were you Royal oak would be my first choice by far.

I live and work in the area and you should know a few things. There are 2 counties right in the area and the DCX headquarters is pretty close to the border. There is Oakland county (where DCX and almost all the cities mentioned are) and then Macomb county right to its East. The difference between the two counties is pretty large.

Oakland county is much more expensive to live in, and I think has a much more hoighty-toighty attitude. Its one of the richest counties in the country and I would say 2 out of every 5 cars you see on the street is a luxury car.

Macomb country is much more affordable and "middle-class". Also, a lot of the northern part of the county is very new and very affordable. The downside is traffic can be a bitch because everyone is moving there now. I live in Macomb Twp inside Macomb county and can tell you 150k will go a LONG ways here. I bought a condo in 2000 in Macomb Twp. for 130k and it was just built, 1200sq ft, and very nice. You can easily find that still here as there are a TON of new condos.

In 2003 I built a 1900sq ft. house for $215k. The exact house costs over 300k in most of Oakland and I don't even want to think about what it would cost in Birmingham or Royal Oak. A birmingham house that is 1000sq ft is easily 400k+.

So my advice is look for a condo in Macomb Twp, Shelby, Utica, or Clinton Twp. They are all a 30 minute max drive to DCX headquarters down M-59.

Thanks for the tips. 🙂 Any good website on where I can look up places in these areas for sale?

The problem with living on M-59 is that it is a small two - lane freeway/4 lane surface street with the traffic density of a 4 lane intersate. This is mainly due to the fact that it goes right through a major mall.

I would not wish that on my worst enemy. I work approximately 2-3 miles from DCX and I live in Clarkston (Oakland County) and my drive is about 30 minutes or so. I know many people are work that live in Macomc Twp., Clinton Twp., and Utica, and all have >1 hour drivers. A friend of mine lives in St. Clair Shores are drive 1.5 hours to work in Rochester Hills.

I highly suggest Oakland county. Sure, it costs more than Macomb, but your tax dollars are spent much better. Do you prefer suburban living or more rural?

Suburbs:
Rochester Hills($$$)
Rochester ($$$$)
Auburn Hills($$)
Troy($$$)
Clarkston ($$$)
Waterford($$)
Pontiac($)
Lake Orion($$)
Orion Twp. ($$$)

Rural:
Brandon Twp.
Ortonville
Goodrich
Oxford

Cripes, are there any condos in the Royal Oak area for $150-$180?

Royal Oak is the seat of hippiness in Oakland County 😛 It's the cool place to be for the 20-year-old fry cooks at MCDs.

EDIT: Traffic is horrendous downtown, housing is insanely expensive, and you have to deal with a bunch of 30-somethings at coffeehouses arguing the merits of Machiavelli.

hey, I resemble that comment! 😉

It's not that bad, and you have to admit that it'll have one of the better bar scenes around here, plus a couple of decent restaurants and the Main Arts to catch indies at.

gobadgrs, how about you just fly down and we'll have a special ATOT gathering. 😀

 to all of the Michigan folks here. I can attest that the above posters' comments are true and accurate.

Maybe try Freep.com or detnews.com for housing listings.

I would tell you to bring an ice scraper, but you are from Wisconsin. That's cool that you are moving to Michigan. Nice to see people moving up in the world. 😉
