My buddy was asking my help to build a Mobile Audio system for his samples and recording and junk. He wants to be able to fit the system into a Portable Rackmount Case like this. Don't know a whole lot about Rackmount cases but here's what it'll need if this is possible:

- Be able to fit ATX Quadcore setup
- Quiet PSU
- Between 1U-4U
- MUST be shorter than 16"-20" in depth to fit Rack

Price range is upto $250, if anyone could point me in the right direction or make a few recommendations I would be very greatful. If I can provide any further details please let me know. On a related note, anyone know a good place to get 1U Short Depth Rackmount LCD Monitor Keyboard?

4U cases are much less expensive than 3 or 2U boxes - since the carrying case is 6U, why not? And I'd make my own LCD monitor/kbd drawer - don't have to pay $800. for $300. worth of stuff. Only those spending OPM can afford to do that...

Cool, been looking up 4U cases... found a couple that are 17.7" and 19.1" depth, that would fit in a rackmount case thats 21" deep? Anyone have a link to a DIY LCD monitor/kbd drawer? Once I get this case and drawer squared, the rest makes sense to me :)

There are rack-mount keyboard drawers out there - modding the monitor into or onto one will be the "fun" part. With a 4U case, you have a 2U space to work with. Most of the kbd drawers are only 1U, so you have 1U left to play with. The Mouser catalog has tons of rack mount stuff listed. They also have an item called a desktop on rails that might be useful. Or you could always make your own from sheet aluminum to mount to a pair of sliding rails. Might want to also choose a 4U case that's made of aluminum to reduce the carrying weight. Most of the standard (and less expensive) rack mount stuff is made of steel - not light... Of course, if you have some husky lads to carry the stuff for you, weight may be less of a concern.
