My aunt is looking for a laptop that will last her a while. It will be used for pretty basic stuff no games or anything she wants to spend around 1,000. I know pretty much nothing about laptops does bestbuy, circuitcity have good ones or should I shop online at dell or some place like that. If I do go look at bestbuy what brands should I like for?

Best buy mainly has brands like Sony, HP, and the like. For a thousand, you should be able to get a rather decent one. Just watch the adds. I bought my HP at Comp Usa.

Otherwise, i believe that Dell (online) is pretty affordable. I dont know too much about reliability and such though.

I dont know if DELL still has this offer but if they do id suggest you grab one of these SOON.

Dell Business has the Inspiron 700M 1.7ghz 512MB 40GB DVD+/-RW 802.11b/g Laptop for $849 + $24 shipping. Remember to select the free DVD burner option then apply code 56L676NPRMTL0J for $500 off. Thanks mem.

Specs:
Pentium M 735, 1.7GHz
12.1" WXGA, 512MB
40GB
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/DL
802.11b/g

The inspiron 700m is a really nice laptop. And for this price its almost a steal. People that use thinkpads switch to these because there built pretty nice and its in the ultraportable catigory.

In terms of duriblity, thinkpads hands out win also most thinkpads can go around 5-7 hours on a full charge. I love my thinkpad, and couldn't think about parting with mine.

Stay away from Sony, because ive had 3, and theres a reason why ive had 3. There pretty, Light, and OOOH material, but they break quite easily. But i emphasize on OOOH~!!

HP's get REALLY REALLY hot at the bottom. My friend has one, there nice too, but if your gonna get a HP invest in a cooler.

Compaqs. i dont know much about these guys, I know the EVO line is really nice and i hear a lot of good things about these, but they cost just as much as thinkpads, and hence go with blue~!!

I guess the bottom picture is how portable does your aunt want? Because if its going to sit on a desk the whole time, which most people do, your better off getting a SFF with a big LCD :p

Well thats my two cents...
