Need some help diagnosing network annoyance

I've had Verizon FIOS internet for 3 years now and the speed is fantastic but ever since I got FIOS my network has always acted strangely. The problem I can most easily describe is that oftentimes I try to access a web site and it takes a while trying to load then comes up with an error page - "The connection has timed out". But then if I hit refresh (F5) the page immediately shows up. This happens a lot.

I thought my old router was the culprit so I bought a new one - a Linksys 10/100 8-port VPN Router

But the problem persists. I have multiple computers on this network and they get the same issue.

The way I am hooked up is I have an ethernet line going from my Verizon OTB (or whatever they call the box which converts the Fiber signal to video/internet/phone) directly to my router (I skipped out on Verizon's horrendous router they gave me) and then from that its wired to my PCs via cat5e cable.

Prior to getting Verizon I never had such a problem but I have no idea why this is happening.

Is there something special the verizon router does that I need to have it? Other wise everything works fine and the speeds (when I connect) are fantastic.

set your dns manually to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.8.4
then go to dos (start run cmd)
ping -t ns.mindspring.com

and watch for timeout gaps that occur at the same time as your page no load.

with comcast i see drops (modem resyncs) every few hours on rainy days that last for 4-10 seconds which during that time nothing works like you said.

Ok but the page timed out error happens only once and as soon as I refresh the page it always works, 100% of the time. It's not a period of time where I keep getting connection timed out - it's only when I first access a new web site or a web site I have not visited in a while. Which makes me thing maybe its a DNS caching issue? I'll try those DNS servers you posted to see if it resolves the situation maybe my ISP's DNS suck.

yeah does sound like dns - routers sometimes suck at dns caching/proxying esp if overloaded (utorrent)

Indeed, I do use utorrent. I thought Linksys router would handle this better though - as opposed to the router Verizon gave me which I read from others is terrible when using torrents. So far the new DNS servers seem to be ok - havent had the problem yet. But only did limited browsing. By tonight I should see if I get the connection time out again
