The orange box probable has the startup VOIP modem and phone adapters/setup/etc...

We have had vonage for 3+ years now. No problems. We recently, 4 motnhs ago, switched to the $14.99/500minutes plan. Still works the same and have had no problems.
Much cheaper the the Cables version and does the same thing.

<-- Owns no stock in vonage and does not work for cable company, unlike some others here. ;)

And any idea where one can buy the box instead of waiting for it to be shipped??????

Circuit City and Best Buy.

I've had Sunrocket for a couple of weeks now, and I have no complaints thus far. I got 1 year of sunlimited service for $99 (plus a $40 equipment charge), so if you want to wait it out, you might get a better deal than you can from Vonage.

If there happens to be a Micro Center store near you, you can save $200 on a purchase if you sign up for Vonage for a year. If you are in the market to buy something they sell.

Ha ha.........that figures. The only 2 places I *haven't* looked!!!

And are you having your old home # ported over to sunrocket???? (If so, has it ported yet or have you been given a time-frame???)

Thanks!

P.S. So it looks like the "equipment charge" *is* a reality as of September 2006, eh?????

No, I didn't have a number ported, so I can't comment on that. I think their website said it might take something around 2 weeks, though. I haven't really used the line much, but the sound quality is excellent (your phone will determine this as well, though), which is what I was most afraid of when switching to VoIP.

Keep in mind that Vonage charges a termination fee if you cancel your service. That's also another reason why I chose Sunrocket instead.

I use SR. It's not a perfect company but it works well enough for me. We have mini outages every so often where we can make calls but not receive them (or vice versa) maybe for an hour or so. But we've never had any major outages or anythign like that. Setup was a breeze. Equipment was shipped out quickly. Transporting our home number took a couple weeks.

It's great.

Keep an eye on their website as normally around holidays they have specials for an extra 3 months or something like that plus free phones. Averages to around $17/mo or so. Vonage is $25 + taxes and fees and such so I don't know why anyone would use them without trying the others first. SR has a money-back guarantee as well.

Hmmmm...............

Well, I posted over in the SR Thread.

It appears that the $39.95 equipment charge is very real. That, plus the lack of 2yr contract, etc. seems like they've got enough subscribers now, so they're gonna stick to the rest.

That's fine.........I'd simply choose to give my money to somebody else.

Vonage doesn't seem to have any equipment fees, but I wonder if they have any other *hidden* fees. (activation, etc.)

Or HECK, give the business to ViaTalk since they're offering what the others won't 'cuz now they've got enough business.

I don't kow about hidden fees but they have taxes and federal fees which makes therir monthly fee double what SR is. Also I don't know if Vonage ha a contract but SR doesn't. You can cancel at any time and get your prorated refund. As for the 2 year thing, that's just a special they run every so often. I have the plain old 1 year deal.

What fee from Vonage is double that of SR??? (Not the $24.99......that'd be a little ridiculous. And what federal fees/taxes could SR avoid that Vonage couldn't being that they're like companies??)

I'm actually takin' a hard look at Viatalk right now. If they're the ones runnin' the promo right now & SR isn't, I'm thinkin' THEY deserve the business!!!

With SR you pay $199 for a year. That's it. No taxes. No other Fees. WIth Vonage it's more like a regular phone company. THey say $24.99 but then the FCC charges and taxes get added on there. I'd imagine that puts it up to around $30/mo. Which is more than double SRs fee of $13.27/mo (15 months at $199)

Not anymore...

On October 1, 2006, SunRocket will begin charging the Federal Universal Service Fund (USF) charge per the Federal Communications Commission. The USF charge will be applied to monthly invoices for all SunRocket monthly plans. Annual plan members will be assessed this charge at their renewal.

You get a free "anywhere" number in addition to your regular home number. My "beach house" number is in Laguna Beach, though it rings at my home.

At $199 for 15 months, that's $13.27 / month FTW!

Don;t forget the $40 "equipment charge" and you have to pay the "Federal Universal Service Fund (USF) charge per the Federal Communications Commission".

Whew!!

I just got a VERY unpleasant phone rep at sunrocket (name was "Bailey") who rather quickly shot down my proposal of 2 years at $199!! We didn't even DISCUSS equipment fees or anything......(FWIW, if I could get the 2yr deal, I'd pay their equipment fee).

In about 10 second's time I explained to him that Viatalk is offering a 2year deal, to which he said......."We no longer offer that."

When I asked him if SR'd be interested in price-matching he said, "No."

I just told him "Well, I'd prefer you guys but I guess I'll have to call Viatalk."

He said, "Goodbye".

Wow........blowin' customers off like they could take 'em or leave 'em!!

No, "Sorry I couldn't help you" or "Sorry to see you go"........nuttin', just 'bye'!

I'll grant you the $40, but read your own quote above on the USF charge:

Assuming the OP signed up for an annual plan PRIOR to October 1st, he would avoid the USF charge (as I am until my 15 month contract terminates next June). :p

That means if you don;t sign up before the end of this month you have to pay. After this month when you pay your bill it will be there.

_Amazing restatement of the last line of my post... I don't require an explaination of the point I've just made to you.

Actually YOU did the restatement but tried to make it sound like you would not have to pay. I put a date and the full text. I am sorry reading comprehension is not something you have ever learned.

Why be sorry? I can read your meager attempts at misinformation just fine.

Your posts tell a different story... you make it sound like the OP will pay the USF charge regardless, which isn't true.

Nice try at spinning disinformation, but you need a remedial course in debate.
