I'm 17 and looking to get an SUV, the problem is that insurance is going to be about 250-300 a month, and i dont want to spend more that $500 a month on the car (1 weeks pay). So far i like the 2000 pathfinder and the 2000 4runner to lease as they run in the $250-300 range. Also like the 2000 grand cherokee but it seems to eat the most gas.

You guys have any suggestions? My criteria:

1. Gas mileage
2. Design / price
3. preformance
4. safety
5. features (Moonroof, a/c, power everything, leather would be nice)

Leasing a car is a very wrong move! You will be upsidedown for the whole time you own it! You will pay much more insurance to get this covered!

Wrong move!

$250 to $300??? How may traffic violations do you have?????? Even my driving record is clean. I'm 17 and I pay about $110/month for a car and a old truck.

Let me get this straight:

You want an SUV with performance, and good gas mileage? Not gonna happen :)

If insurance really will cost you that much and $500 is the most you can go and don't mind a lease I think you'll have to get a late-model but used SUV. Why do you want one though? Unless you need to haul stuff around you'll get better gas mileage and performance with a car.

I'll take the Honda CR-V.
Its looks sharp, its less than $22,000
I think they have special finance rate or least rate 4.9 or something.
High Resale value, and Hey its a HONDA.

good Luck

Yeah, its gonna be tough to find an SUV with good gas mileage...

an Acura MDX is about as close as youll come, but they are $35,000...

Good Luck...

<Edit> Toyota RAV4 (The new one) is pretty good lookin and only $24,000... Gets decent gas mileage too.

Do you want an SUV for true off roading? the added on road traction? or do you just want to have an SUV?

Not really an SUV, but a Dodge Dakota with AWD a 4.7L or 5.9L V8 and a 5-speed rules. They have great grip for high speed cornering, snow, and mud. They're also rather quick with the standard transmission. SSCCCCCRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECCCCH!

HKSturboKID you like the look of those? I'll save my opinion on it - the Honda part of your argument is good though! You know what i hate about CRV's? The way I can see their axel moving when i drive behind them. That so annoys me and I don't know why.

gregshin might be right, get a used xterra (even the oldest of them are pretty new) and should be quite cheap. Not excellent power but finding a fast SUV in your price range with low gas mileage and new is going to be quite impossible, Kaine.

Dodge dakotas also look like mean mofos!! But, he only has $500/month for insurance and the vehicle.

it's not really an suv, but if you want utility, good gas mileage, and reliability, consider a subaru. i live in alaska and cars don't last long up here, about half ot the cars on the road are subarus, that should tell you something.

also, does it have to be new?

I'm driving my mother's '00 Impreza Outback sport right now (lent for a year!). Its an auto (so sad), the 2.2 liter version, so its 0-60 is a pathetic 11 seconds (thats what I got in a few trials), but its a sweet car. I feel that people love how it looks, I do, and it drives nicely. If you get the 2.5 RS with standard transmission you'll be doing 0-60 in 8 sec flat and thats with 4-wheel drive.

And I think most people will agree that with a new car you're only paying for new-car smell. You can get a 1-2 year old car, save a bundle, and still have a strong warranty left on it.

first off, i'm a sales rep. for a sprintPCS 3rd party, and they pay well.

I prefer a bigger car (Like to sit high), but its mostly that my parents feel thet its safer for me to drive an SUV.

I live in new york so insurance is very expensive. My good gas mileage i mean something better than 16MPG in the city, of its possible.

I found a 97' pathfinder for $109/month (lease) for 36M, it has 35K miles on it, i know at the dealership they're probably gonna push that up, but it still sound like a great deal.

If your going to get a pathfinder and can afford 250-300 a month then get a NEW pathfinder, they have alot more power, nicer interior, they look better, safer, faster, better road handeling etc.. :)

I drove a 96 Cherokee with a 4.0
60k miles
NEVER DRIVING AN SUV AGAIN

Had no road feel, soft brakes, sensetive gas, awful experience.

Gonna stick with my 86 Pontiac parisienne, 5.0, 250lb/f torque :D
170k and better road feel than a Cherokee, sweet :)

But if you like sitting high....
