Hi all,

I was referred here by a friend who told me this wass the right place to ask. basically I am a first timer to computer building. Its not as if I don't know anything about computers, its just my first time, so I am posting here to ask for a little help.

I intend to buy parts to build a PC designed for gaming. below you will see what parts I have chosen so far and where I am buying them. I live in Brussels, Belgium (Europe) and I buy my parts in Germany because of quality/price reasons, so if you have a suggestion for a different component, it would be great if you took it from the website, it is in English, simply click the British flag in the top right corner after you follow the link.

Graphics Card:http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=24996&agid=707
Hard Drive: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=26825&agid=689
Gaming mouse: http://www1.atelco.de/articled....jsp?aid=4804&agid=759
Gaming Headset: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=23732&agid=264
CPU Processor, Quad Core: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=19925&agid=398
Motherboard: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=22385&agid=659
Memory: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=10028&agid=599
Power Supply: http://www1.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=23607&agid=240
Windows XP Professional: http://www1.atelco.de/articled....jsp?aid=2482&agid=185

The total price is around 1000 euros, which is not too bad european price. I am basically asking if these are good components for a gaming PC and whether anyone has any advice on better parts for equal price or something like that, just general advice.

Thanks in advance

As far as I can tell, all looks good, except for two things.

That hard drive is not really one with a good reputation. I'd pick a Western Digital or Samsung model and Ive just ordered a new PC so I did a lot of research on what hard drive to buy. I was advised to steer clear from Hitachi's Deskstars.

Another thing is that you should really get at least Vista or use the Win7 RC since XP wont recognize all 4 GB of ram (so I've heard), and its cheaper to upgrade to Win7 from Vista rather from XP if you cant or dont want to get the Win7 RC.

But besides that, it looks good altho I am not an expert on Intel builds...

Shargrath is correct on both counts.

Get a Western Digital Caviar Black or Samsung F1 drive instead.

And just download and use Windows 7 RC for the next year for free (grab the 64-bit edition so you can use your full 4GB).

everything looks fine to me. pick up vista 64 bit for the OS (hopefully includes win7 upgrade voucher), unless you really need XP for any particular purpose.

nothing wrong with hitachi hard drives. samsung f1 and WD black are both 15-20 euros more on that site.

i use the same mouse and headset. heatset works fine but will 'pinch' a larger head a bit.

From what I can gather, your build cost for the CPU, RAM and MB is ?413.00 excluding shipping.

I had a look on the 'Net and the Belgiums pay quite a bit more than the Germans for PC components. In Germany, an I7 920, MSI X58 Pro, and 6GB of OCZ Gold Edition DDR3 1600MHz RAM will set you back ?490.00 excluding shipping and presumably including taxes; I wasn't sure since I cant read German. In Belgium the I7 920 alone would set you back ?300.00.

Phenom 720BE for 115,00 ? or maybe the Phenom 810 for 129,00 ?. (Anand cranked the 810 quite impressively.)

790GX motherboards from 115,00 ? to 120,00 ?. With the money saved you can pay for your DDR3 RAMs.

The GTX 285 you listed is more than twice the price of the Sapphire HD 4870 1GB. See Anand's comparison here.

So you have a choice: either save yourself 200,00 ?, or save yourself 50,00 ? and Crossfire the HD 4870 1GB (or maybe buy the  !!)

Damn,

heyheybooboo,

You are awesome. I just altered the list as follows:

CPU: http://www2.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25468&agid=1242
Power supply: http://www2.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=23607&agid=240
Mobo: http://www2.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25395&agid=1232
Crossfire GFX cards: http://www2.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25954&agid=1004
RAM:http://www4.atelco.de/4AXN5LsY...sp?aid=22726&agid=1010
Hard Drive: http://www4.atelco.de/4AXN5LsY...jsp?aid=22467&agid=689
Ive got a DVD drive and an OS already now.

This puts the price at 868 euros, thats amazing. Saves me about 200+ euro, I get two high Performance Graphics cards and the DDR3 RAM. I assume this would make teh computer more beastly while being cheaper at the same time. Thank you so much man.

Edit: Made changes to hard drive, its now caviar black, and RAM is 2x2 gig DDR3. Should all be compatible right?

amd ddr3 mobos run dual channel, not triple. either stick to 2x2gb or go for 4x2gb. 2x4gb is pretty pricey.

if that's your only hard drive, get something faster than a 5400rpm drive. caviar black's only 3 euros more. the hitachi in the first post would also be faster.

Alright,

here is the final build, The mouse and headset are good so I dont need to post link. I already have DVD-Drive and Computer Case. I already have an OS now. (Windows 7 RC)

CPU (Quad Core): http://www4.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25468&agid=1242
Mobo: http://www4.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25844&agid=1232
RAM(DDR3): http://www4.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=22726&agid=1010
Power supply 650 watt: http://www4.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=23607&agid=240
Hard Drive: http://www4.atelco.de/articled...jsp?aid=22467&agid=689
Graphics cards: http://www4.atelco.de/articled...sp?aid=25954&agid=1004

I am going to go with the crossfire option, two of the graphics cards above for max performance. It also saves me about 50 euro.

Any final thoughts or suggestions?
