Hey all
well i am starting to look for a ring for the little lady, we have been looking together and got an idea about what she likes...we actually found one and this is the problem i have

the ring in question...is close to $3,000.00 without a diamond in it....it is platinum with princess cut diamonds in an invisible set bout (.75) carat wieght

here is my problem and i want some opinions on this....the ladies that i have worked with have been nice but have repeatedly told me that

"oh your in luck here, you don't have to bother with the price because it is the lowest possible price we are able to sell to you at" basically saying don't bother trying to get it cheaper because we aren't going to budge....

now this ring is beautiful and i have looked all over to find another like it and haven't been able to...i really don't feel like purchasing the ring and a diamond for the price of around 7,000 dollars....

my question...is it even possible to bargin with these people at the jewlery stores or am i waisting my time trying to get a better deal ?

anyone have any suggestions or tips as to get them to work on the price any ???

i know when u go to the mall they jack prices up big time and then do the classic....oh we can probably work on the price....basically to just get you in the door or interested.

any help or suggestions....i would super appreciate it

There's a place here called Diamonds Direct that encourages everyone to go to the mall and shop first, then come see them. They are always cheaper.
Some mall stores will deal, some won't.

You can get diamonds at Sam's Club, too. They will order one for you, or at least they would a couple of years ago. The quality was just as good as a jewelry store and was a lot cheaper.

I got my wife's diamond from a jewelry store where I know the owner. Sold it to me for 500 over cost.(showed me the invoice, even). I got a 1.12 carat princess cut with really good color and clarity for 4 g's. Same diamond in Service Merchandise at the time (actually a bit smaller and had more inclusions) was over 7g. :Q

Shop around, it pays. I shopped A LOT. I took her around and got her to show me what she wanted, then went to work finding the best one for the least money. I've forgotten most of what I knew about color and clarity, but I knew it like the back of my hand back then.

Oh, also look up Diamonds Direct and see if they have a location near you. They don't have a showroom like traditional stores do, and work by appt. only. I'd have bought from either them or Sam's if not from my friend.

Good luck. Scroll down to see where I got mine...Mike Smith Jewelers

first platnum is EXPENSIVE:| why not white gold? I did a mixture of white and tellow gold for my wife.

DONT PAY RETAIL!! where is rossman when you need him. I would reccomend going to the mainstream stores just to find what she likes. then find a private jeweler to help you, maybe one that will set stones you brin him.

Good luck.

Well to start with, I really dont think buying a diamond is a reasonable investment. The whole diamond industry is a huge scam that has been perpetrated on the buying public of the whole world.

DeBeers has the market so cornered that people actually pay thousands upon thousands of dollars for a product that is more or less worthless. Diamonds are by no means in short supply as far as nature is concerned, diamonds are only driven up in price by the distributors and owners of the mines.

A $100 ring means the same thing as a $10,000 ring, is it really worth all that money just for a ring? Think of the dent that kind of cash could make in the down payment of your first home, or even $10,000 in a bank issued CD would be worth a crapload more money than the ring is ever going to be worth. Figure you are never going to get more than 50% of the retail price of a ring should it ever need to be re-sold.

Any girl who would insist on a huge ring instead of having the money properly invested for the future isnt worth marrying...IMHO.

7k for a ring ?

I'd much rather get something custom made in plain gold without a stone,it would be more meaningful, cheaper and leave $$$ to put aside.Married life is stressful enough, starting out from the beginning with a policy that you aren't going to load yourselves with unneeded fiscal burdens is a good one.

Baff has a good point on the custom job. 3 grand can get you one hell of a nice custom ring. Personally, I wouldn't buy anything more than a cheapie white gold wedding band from a mall retailer. I'd much rather get something of higher quality, probably for less, and support local businesses by going to a private jewelry shop around town instead. But that's just me though.

When you say that it has princess diamonds in an invisble set - do you mean that it has like 4 small princess cut diamonds put together to look like one big one? If so, I'd be hesitant. I've seen rings like these and I would be concerned about the diamonds coming loose and falling out. It just doesn't look like a ring that would hold up well over time.

Tell her if that if she really loves you, she'd be happy with just a band, because it's the meaning of the ring and not the price that matters. :) If she agrees, then you can buy a simple band and if she disagrees you can call off the marriage because you'll know upfront that all she cares about is how much money you spend on her.

Or better yet tell her that if she really loves you that 3k could go a long way in getting that home theater setup :) That way you'd both have something to enjoy.

HA HA HA, Well i have the home theater already so can't get new stuff there

I know that platinum is super expensive....i have tried to look around for somethign in white gold looking the same....Also i am going to try to see if there are any private places that will make a setting for me...

i am not looking to spend a huge amount here would like to by all means keep it around 4 to 5 G's at the most....so u think it is even worth trying to get a better deal with the ring i was looking at ? or should i save my self the embarassment

I spent $1500 on my fiance's engagement ring, and a year later she still receives complements on it on almost a daily basis. While on the other hand, a nurse she knows received an engagement ring from a doctor valued at probably close to $15,000 and no one has any real good comments about it other than "it's big".

Price doesn't necessarily buy beauty, or love.

This may not be your thing but....

Overstock.com has a 10% off coupon floating around and they do sell loose stones.
