My family is planning on going to Philly in May and I have been chosen to make all the arrangements. We are going to be driving from NY - PHL. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some hotels in the downtown area. We are going from Friday - Monday and plan on doing sightseeing Fri - Sun then going to a Phillies game on Mon and from there leaving.

Cliffs:

Need recomendations for a hotel in the downtown area
Need recomendations for restaurants in the downtown area

And yes we do plan on visiting Gino's and Pat's for steaks :)

What's your budget for hotel? Hampton Inn around 13th and Race is half decent. Loews Hotel is very nice but pricey, Hilton Garden Inn around the convention center is decent...Marriot near city hall is pricey but check the Marriott section of flyertalk.com for some corporate discount codes. Just don't show up to the desk w the whole family and make sure you pick a company that's in the area (I know Sungard has a good discount there).

There's a million good places to eat. Victor's Cafe is where they filmed Rocky VI (speaking of which, make sure you go to the Italian Market)...Maggiano's is near the Reading Terminal Market. I can recommend some other stuff if you want a certain kind of food.

I looked up Loews, Hotel Windsor and the Hilton Inn each were about $1000 for the 3 days. We have 6 people going and are going to try and sneak in 2 of them and just get a single room with 2 beds and get a couple cots or maybe a fold out couch or something. If that plan falls through then I guess we can go with 2 rooms. Our budget is $1000-1100 for the hotel room.

Once we pick the hotel then places to eat will be next so we can atleast eat some place close to where we are staying.

Art Musuem, the Zoo is near there and you could do both in one day, Italian Market (pick up some fresh cheese to take home at DiBruno Bros and you have to get cannoli's at Isgro's a couple blocks away, fyi the Italian Market closes early on Sunday), Independence Hall w Liberty Bell right near it, Longwood Gardens is a little south of the city and this isn't the best time of year to go but still nice. Franklin Institute is cool especially if there's kids (check out the IMAX theater, it's the huge dome one, not like most IMAX's). If you want to party check out Olde City or Delaware Ave aka Columbus Blvd. Atlantic City is ~2 hrs away if you want to get your gamble on, they just opened a "racino" (horse racing + slots, no table games) in Chester which is only 15-20 minutes south of Center City. If you can sneak away from the family for a little bit go to Delilah's or Crazy Horse.
