so on the dell dimension 4600, I found that the cd drives are not in my computer. but they are listed in device manager with a yellow exlamation next to each of the drives. The computer did have many viruses and spyware removed and apparently this issue came up when those were removed from the system. Now the comptuer does have Roxio CD Creator 6 on this Windows XP computer as well as Sonic Recordnow and Sonic DLA installed as well as musicmatch jukebox. I've read I may need to uninstall these programs before running some cd tools from a flash drive.
Now some of the tools are Doug Knox's called XP CD-DVD fix. I think what it does is remove the upper and lower filters from the registry so the drives can be reinstalled upon reboot of the O/S. Obcviously I may or could do a sfc scannow to search but icould ask for a cd but we don't have working drives at the moment. Now the BIOS does see both drives and they have power so I know their there. Windows knows they're there just can't talk to them yet.
I also found a Microsoft tool with an .msi extension that also is an automatic tool claimed to remove the upper and lower filters in the registry to restore the drive.
Would these tools work or has anyone tried them with success or had a problem like this? And my next question is should I need to remove those burning programs first before I run those tools? The last thing I'd want to do is do a system restore and a dell like this model you have to restore off of like 10 cd's to get it all back. Not alot of fun.
