Im a student at a high school, and ever sense I discovered distributed computing (very reciently) i thought of the idea of trying to get my school to set up come computers to run it along side of its daily activities. Would this be a hard thing to do? The computers at our school arent the fastest so would running something like boinc affect the performance of the computer while its running windows 98? Also, any guide showing how to set up a network to run boinc would be great. thanks.

It would be really cool if you could accomplish it. Although my experiences with a lot of system administrators, especially schools, are not the best. Somewhat paranoid and careful, but who can blame them?

Try to get a lot of information regarding DC, and about the project. Specifically, it may be good to try and put together some information about how DC does not adversly affect the computers, and perhaps even network bandwidth. If it is a BOINC project, try the BOINC Wiki. Also, the TAS forums have some setup info. They will need to understand how it is setup, how it is managed, how it effects users, and if it is a risk in anyway. And they will also like to know it does not create more work for them, or security problems.

What are the specs on the comps? And do you have any relationship with the IT staff?

MrWizer pretty much summed it up. be ready with facts, benifits, and be able to answer any questions regarding security issues or performance issues.

Also try to work out ways that teh distributed computing projects you run could be used by some of the science/math classes as part of their research. See if you could get those teachers to support it.

And if you need help with the facts/answers to possible questions by the IT department, feel free to ask for help here. 🙂

Good luck with it! 😀

Thanks, and no i do not have a releationship with the IT department as im only a freshman >.< Im going to compile some info for the Head IT guy so he can look it over.

.... and ask him over for a cup of tea here at he forum ... or at TAS. He is very welcome to talk to us, to ask his questions, to vent his fears. A lot of very knowledgable people look around and post here - Rattledagger for one ... 😀
