Need some help/advice with mobo/heatsink

Hello,

I sitting here building my new computer together, a bit nervous was about 2 years ago since I build my last one =P I have some worries/questions thought I'd ask them here to go the safe before unsafe way 🙂

On the motherboard it has 2 connections for power from the PSU one 24-pin EATXPWR and one 8-pin ATX12V, from reading the manual I've gathered I need to insert cord from PSU into both of these (From previous computers I think Ive only used the big one =P), is this correct? 🙂 And also in the manual it says I should insert the 8-pin one and there is one from the PSU, BUT on the mobo itself where the connector is there is this like plastic cover in the port so it makes it a 4-pin (If I remove it it becomes the full 8-pin avaible), so that made me a bit worried why have it there at all if in the manual it says to insert an 8pin there?

Then another question is, I decided not to go with the boxed heatsink/fan, so got a zalman CNPS9700NT, it weighs 760g and it says max specified weight for Core2 Duo socket 775 is 450g, but it comes with a backplate and in the zalman manual they are away of the weight and say that no dmg from moving computer with this kind of heavy fan is their responsibility etc.., so I guess that will work, I am a bit worried about adding the Therlmal Paste though, it comes with the heatsink and says I should put some on both the cpu and the heatsink/fan, any advice about this? Guess too much is bad and too little is bad also 🙂

Thank you for fast reply ^^ Eager to finish it 🙂 Also apologize if any spelling error in english 🙂

Either its been longer then 2 years since your last build or you built a very out dated system 2 years ago.

Since 2000 and the interduction of the P4 there has been an aditional power connector by the CPU that is required. A couple of years ago the connection was upgraded from the 4 pin P4 the now 8 pin EPS connector. This is the main connection by which the CPU recieves its power. Now 2 years ago your motherboard may have only had a 20 pin main connector but the new standard uses a 24 pin main connector. Now not all newer PSUs have the 8 pin EPS. many motherboards have that cover over 4 of the pins to chow which side of the connector the 4 pin should go if you have only the 4 pin and not the 8 pin.

The Zailman cooler will have no problems with your board. Use the hardware provided and everything will be fine. There are much larger coolers on the market that mount up just fine so you have nothing to worry about. As for the thermal paste all you need is 2 small lines of the paste going down the CPU. Even a nice dab of it in the middle of the CPU will be fine too.

Hey again, I just realised a problem, was gonna try it out now (hasnt applied thermal grease yet), when i put the heatsink/fan on the mobo/cpu theres no way I can reach to one of the screws, can i remove the mobo from the chassi and install the heatsink/fan and then put the mobo back in? Thx ^^

Edit: well i removed the mobo on a flat nonstatic surface and put some grease on to the cpu and put the zalman fan on so it blows out to on of the chassifans, was a bit scary since u have to press so hard for the screw to reach the hole to be able to fasten it, hope it works, gotta go to work now ; ; so will continue later =)
