Need some guidance on backing up files

I am never really a big fan of backing up files because it takes too much space on my HD and I am very keen at keeping my HD as clean as it possibly can be.

But after much thought and consideration and painful experiences 🙁 I've decided to suck it up and start backing up my HD, the question is ....how?

What I want to achieve with backing up files are 1) mirror the entire HD, so when my laptop crashes, i can get it to work again quickly 2) I don't want any gimmick or something too technical that I might not understand. 3) I'd like to partition my hd and keep all the backup files (mirror of the HD) in that partition so it doesn't mess up the HD 4) Cheap is good, free is best!

Please pour me with your suggestion. Thanks.

Your laptop hard drive will die someday so backup from one part of the drive to another is almost useless.

Buy an external USB2 hard drive for $50-150 depending on size, most of the name brand ones come with some sort of backup software. (GottaDeal.com has deals on the main page every day or two, also see Newegg.com for user reviews)

Besides using that software also learn how to manually back up key data files like My Documents and your mailbox.
