I was wondering if I would get a good increase in performance going from a geforce 4 4600 to a radeon 9700 pro.
Here is the rest of my system

Athlon XP 2600 333 FSB
Epox 8K9A KT400 Motherboard
Corsair XMS PC3500 512 Memory
Maxtor ATA 133 80 gig with 8mb cache
Pny Geforce 4 4600

I don't overclock

The games I play the most are Battlefield 1942 and Medal Of Honor Allied Assault

what fps are you getting now? what resolution are you playing at? from your specs, i don't think you would get a very big speed increase vs. the $$$ put out. i would leave it the way it is. if you must upgrade, i will always take your "old" parts off your hands and put them to gooood use!! 🙂

If you play with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering at high resolutions, the answer is a definite YES.
Or if you want to but can't now, the answer is YES.
If not, then it will make a difference but you may not notice. You'll get 200 fps instead of 150.

But looking at the rest of your system, it looks like money is not really an issue so what the hell, give it a shot. And I also would be more than willing to take that old Ti 4600 and give it a nice caring home. In fact, that 2600 is kinda slow. You should probably get yourself a 2800 and pass that old chip on to me.

I sure wish they would put out that 1.2 patch for BF1942. Of course the thing that really frustrates me about that game is the hit detection which Dice says they will address in the 1.3 patch. Sucks to have to lead a guy by 5 ft when he's only 5 ft from you. That's the one thing that occasionally sends me back to playing MOH once or twice a week. Although it doesn't stop me from playing BF about 4 hours a night. Don't you wish they could combine the infantry part of MOH with the planes, tanks, and ships of BF. Now that would be a sweet game.

Do you play with FSAA/ansio? If you don't, you sure will with the 9700. It is marginally faster in most situations, turn up the FSAA/ansio, and we're talkin 60fps vs/ 20fps. Is that enough of a performance difference for ya?

your system is already so fast that I do not think you will see a difference playing those particular games. Doom3 and Unreal2 will probably be a different scenario, but your system can handle MoH:AA and BF1942 just fine right now.

A 4600 is more than good enough for any game right now. Your money would probably be better spent on a nice 21" monitor or good surround speakers, if you dont have either of those yet.
