Need some flashing info please!!!

I was wondering what is the safest way to flash a bios? by that i mean i know video bios/rom should be disabled previous, but what about the caches? Also does the L1 cache actually hold data or does it just hold address locations to it in ram. The reason i'm asking is if it is only and address in there , i'm figuring that it wouldn't be a problem being enabled during a flash. Just wanna know the standard/safest flash procedures , thx
