i somehow overlooked this forum last night (thanks for the replies!): http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1809741&enterthread=y

got a good starting point though which i'm hoping will end here. so i need a quiet 60/70mm fan for a DVR (previous 60mm fan had an unbearable whine), and another fan to go over 3 HDs in a PC. now the fan is for a custom drive cage (not yet made) and i figured a 120mm would be good if only for the increased coverage, but i've been reccommended a 92mm fan... so far the stats on panaflo have impressed me, with scythe not far behind.

i'd appreciate good sites where i could buy fans from too. i have an existing JMC 70mm fan which i like and pulled from another DVR, but i can't find anywhere to buy them, and i'd rather buy both fans from the same place to reduce shipping costs. thanks for any input!

For a quiet 120x25, look at the Akasa on the home page of http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/
If you want more cfm, look at the Delta Triple Blade low speed 120x25 at the same site.

For 70mm...If you can find AMD CPU fans that are 70x15mm buy them. They undervolt very well. I think Delta supplies AMD, so look for Delta fans in 70x15mm. I want some too, so if you find any...Post it here.

For 60x10mm. Allelectronics and BGMicro have Delta 60x10mm at <<$3 each. They are near silent at 5V@4". I bought 6 awhile back. Two are mounted facing the bottom of two HDs.
For ease of mounting they can be mounted side by side in pairs. I sand the sides flat, then super glue them together. Paired at 5V they are near silent but move some decent air.

For a quiet fan, you might want to check out SilentPCReview and read their recommendations, as well as browse the forums there for info. Also, don't always trust advertised stats on fans, their accuracy varies greatly between companies, plus the stats can't really tell you just what kind of sound it has (clicks, hum, etc.).

thanks for all the comments and thoughts! so i got 2x 70mm (x15 i think?) JMC panther fans, the akasa 120mm that was mentioned and an akasa 60mm, and tested them with different voltage. the panther is like a vaccum/blow dryer at 12v and i thought they were a complete loss. it only does a bit better at 7v, but is surprisingly QUIET at 5v.... i've got 2 HD's with 2 panthers nearby and the HDs seem louder than the fans, they're great so far. just as an FYI yankee incase your still looking for some quiet 70mm's. the panthers were $12 each i think with $5.xx shipping.

the akasa 120mm seems just a tad noisy but doesn't have any whine or whatever, it's just the sound of air. the akasa 60mm doesn't seem near as quiet as the 120mm unfortunately though. i only did quick tests though and not in as quiet an environment as i wanted so i plan on testing all the fans again and comparing them to some other fans i have laying around in a few days hopefully, if anyones interesting in those results let me know.

2 weeks later, but yea.

at any rate, i found that very fan earlier and asked about it but heard alot of negatives about evercool and i think i even saw bad reviews for it, but i don't quite remember. i know every company makes both good and bad, but have you tried that fan yourself?

No I haven't tried it. I wanted you to buy one and do a review :p

I cut a nice hole in the side of the 5.25" bay and use a 70x15 fan from an AMD HS to cool
two HDDs that have some old RAM sinks bonded on their sides. It's a VG fan. Near silent
at 5V yet drives good air. I don't have it's part# but I'm pretty sure it's a Delta.

At http://www.bgmicro.com/ >fans>page 2>The Thin Fan=Delta 60x10, sweet little bb fan.
Starts/runs in near silence at 5V and not that bad at 12V.
I've posted my fan sources too often and they seem to be drying up.

bah... i've spent $50 more on fans and related products then i intended to already, i'm all fanned out myself. and that's ignoring the fact that i've spent about $400 on 2 dvrs+2 HDs+fans+cables+peripherals+got 2 free dvrs in the process that i have no real use for... all just to make one high capacity usable dvr for myself. and of course my monitor of 7+ years is flaking out so i'll probably need to throw down more cash for that aswell.

in conclusion, i ain't buyin' no more damn fans :p
