:p OK, you can stop laughing now. This is embarassing! I consider myself a pretty educated dude when it comes to PC/computing/gaming/internet terminology. But...I don't know what these terms mean:

Warez
Winrar

These terms have been run by me during conversations I've had in the past week or so. I don't want to sound stupid by asking "um, sorry, what does that mean?"...but I guess I wind up sounding stupid after all!

Please educate me. Thanks.

Warez - pirated software you can download on the internet. (illegal)

Winrar - compression software.

Warez (pronounced 'wares' with a bit of a z at the end e.g., 'waresz'), like Tauren said, is illegally distributed software. WinRAR, like Tauren also said, is compression software, very popular among warez couriers. It offers much better compression than ZIP, and quite a few more features.

Warez is software which is distributed illegaly. Either the protection (activation code) has been removed or a keygenerator/patch is provided with the software.

Winrar is a program like WinZip, only a million times better. It's often used for warez because the .rar format of WinRar offers many advantages over the .zip format, like better compression, recovery record etc.

[edit]: I guess we've explained it by now well enough, no?

they've pretty much explained it all pretty well...

Warez, pronounced "wheres"" as in "where's bob?" usually refers to an illgally copied or distributed piece of copyrighted software that was never meant to be traded/duplicated without the companies permission. I.E. Software pirating...

Typically "pirates" like to replace the letter "s" with "z" to show that it is infact illgeal activity that they are taking part in, example: Gamez, Appz, Moviez, Mp3z, etc...

WinRAR is a file compression program, much like winZip

but be warned that warez isnt the most accepted practice. many people disagree greatly with software piracy and is'nt tolerated on many UBB's, such as AT! :)

have fun

Also note RAR files are typically split up into "disks." An average game (usually with music and video ripped) will be about 50 disks...a little over 2MB in size each. ISO releases are 15MB disks usually.

I know this purely from what I've read ;)

I hate having to download 50 small files, I wish everyone would put a single .rar or .zip file up of their "shareware";)

That's because of two factors:

1) when on a slow connection (read dial-up) it's easier to upload (and download) multiple small files instead of one big file.
2) smaller files are easier to spread over multiple accounts (GayCities, XDrive etc.). Many webhosts don't allow files larger than 2 MB, by the way.

but what about those poor individuals still creeping along on 56K (or lower) connections?

Buy the program instead of stealing it or pay for a faster connection.

The problem with Warez is that if you download a hacked copy. Any expansion that is released. unless it's hacked by the same group won't work.

I.E. you can't run a full release of the Diablo 2 expan on a hacked copy of diablo 2.
