Does anyone know any good digital camera forums or facts where i can read up on whats best for me. I do some design , mostly product packaging and stuff, but for the first time i need to take pictures for a customer. I want to take some high quality good shots. I was thinking about purchasing a digital rebel xt, but the price , of course, makes it a HUGE investment. I currently have a 7.2 MP sony p200, but i read an article about MP not being everything and that the smaller higher resolution cameras cant compete with the big boys like the digital slr from Nikon or Canon. What do you think? Is it worth it, and why?

How much does quality matter? If your gonna buy an XT budget for a better lense...the kit lense is a POS.

Digital SLR's like the Canon Digital Rebel XT and the Nikon D70s take great pictures, but only if you're willing to take the time to learn how to use them properly. You'll also want to make sure that you have some extra cash on hand to get some good lenses, which can end up costing as much as the camera itself by the time you're done purchasing them.

If you already know how to use most of the advanced functions on your p200, you'll probably want to upgrade so you can get a wider range of lenses and flash attachments. If you're the kind of person who always leaves the camera on "auto", though, you probably won't notice enough of a difference in image quality to make the upgrade worthwhile.

A Rebel XT and 50mm 1.8 ($75) lens will produce images the will be head, shoulders, torso, legs, and feet above anything current point and shoots can dream of doing. If you want a zoom lens, the Tamron 28-75 2.8 ($300ish used) will do the same.

I cna use regular SLR lenses on the digicam right?

Well, for a Canon let's say, the lens has to be designed for the Canon EF mount. Not just any lens will do.

As was said, a DSLR will take MUCH better pictures and is FAR more versatile than a P&S camera, but there is a learning curve. You need to know things like exposure and depth-of-field. It is also much more expensive because of the cost of lenses. I own a EOS-20D and just bought my fifth lens, a $1250 EF 24-105 F4L. That's just one lens! There are of course "high value" lenses like the Tamron 28-75 F2.8, Canon 50 F1.4, Canon 70-200 F4L, Sigma 18-50 F2.8, etc.

dont even think about the 20d, or anything above the rebel xt, you are much better of spending less money on the camera and more money on a lense
