Need some Cyrix Advice (dont laugh!)

Alrighty here is the deal, my roomate and i have been contemplating replacing the computer we use as a file server/audio mixer, we wanted a machine that would be much faster than the poor p-II 233 we have running now, not be too expensive, be quiet as possible and use as little power as possible, after some debate we thought a Cyrix chip (one of the newer giga-pro or whatever they are called) chips would fit the bill, i know they consume less power than either of its amd or intel counter parts, and produce less heat, what we want to know is A) can you run these chips with a passive heatsink with no problems and B) what is the lowest wattage powersupply you could run one of these chips on, remember its not about extreme speed its about saving power!

I once ran a P3 800 w/ PAssive Cooling and a 220 W power supply, and that is a HUGE step up from a P2-233
 
If your just going to swap the chip out of that motherboard, why not get a k6-2 or k6-2 plus, most of the old p2 233 boards will support k6-2 chips, and most of the k6-2's have remapped multipliers so that you can run a 400 mhz chip even if the board doesnt support 6x multiplier etc etc. Also, a k6-2 450 @ 2.2v (which you could probably lower)dissapates about 16-19 watts of heat average, so running without a fan is a possibility. And the best part is they are around 20 bucs 😀.
And going from 233 to ~450 would definately make a good difference.

u could run a VIA C3 processor using just a passive heatsink (most commonly, the cooler master DP5-GN01) in an integrated mobo using a 100 watt PSU no problem...

i've run 500mhz celeries off 100 watt psus that come standard in some HP pavilion models...no problems at all.

100watts are somewhat hard to find though...most mATX/flexATX cases come w/ less than 200 watt psus.
 
you could probably put a CuMine Celeron on a slocket, and put a nice big passive heatsink on it.
especially if you drop the voltage a touch.
if the board doesnt support coppermine or 100fsb
you could probably run a PPGA celeron passively cooled as well.
