Need some college insight/advice for my girlfriend...

My girlfriend is a senior and was accepted to UF a few weeks ago but can't decide whether to start out there or at a junior college near the university. She will be receiving Florida Bright Futures which pays for 75% of her tuition at whichever school she chooses, but she's really torn over which school to attend. She's intelligent and works hard, and I don't doubt she could make the grades at UF, but it will be the first time she's had to have a real job, live on her own, pay rent, etc.

What do you guys suggest? I'm pretty torn myself.

With 75% paid for, UF seems to be a no brainer to me.
If you try to transfer from a JC, you have the hassle of trying to transfer credits and possibly repeating classes.

i dont see how there is any difficulty in this decision. Jr. college versus an actual university??? It's a no brainer. Tell her to go to UF

This is not a problem at all. In the state of Florida, schools that are part of the state school system must accept all credits from community college. If your girlfriend is planning on going to santa fe, she will have no problem transferring those credits over. I go to UF (Senior in Finance and English) and it's a bit of a challenge making the switch from high school to College, she would not be at a disadvantage going to a CC for a year or 2 (get an AA?) then transferring over with a solid foundation and a good work ethic.

/edit I think the people in this thread are missing the point. Even with no scholarships UF is not expensive. It's $95 a credit hour, so about 3grand a year in tuition. I think the OP is saying that his GF doesn't feel ready for a university as large as UF, or maybe just isn't ready for a full 4 year school yet. It's totally understandable, that's why there are CC's. Some people just aren't ready right out of high school for a big school like UF. Why doesn't she take some classes at Santa Fe over the summer and see how she likes it? Credit hours at a CC are ~$50 so 6 creds will run her $300.

Santa Fe is an excellent school, IMHO. Classes are small (~20-30 in most of mine), if that matters..

I don't remember all the professors I had, but William Bowers was excellent (ENC2301 - Advanced Composition).

Thanks for your post DaiShan, I think it may help her decision. I honestly think she would rather go to Santa Fe but feels guilty not going to the school she worked her butt off in high school to get into.

What is your current situation? Are you a Senior as well? To put it bluntly, if she is going to UF and is decent looking, I don't think the relationship will last very long.

Going to Santa Fe in no way precludes her from attending UF. She doesn't even have to stick around the full 2 years before transferring. If she takes a semesters worth of classes, then decides it's a cake walk, she shouldn't have any problem transferring into UF. Just have her make sure that she gets everything in writing from the University, and keeps copies for herself. UF is notorious for misplacing important documents (like the time they refunded my tuition, then canceled my registration because I didn't pay. wtf?) Anyways, GL to her.
