Im trying to hook up a few HD products to my new TV and existing receiver. I have the HD DVR, DVD player and xbos 360. I know i need to use the OSD of the receiver (on screen display) but how does the receiver know which video to use. In using the OSD do I assign V1 as component one? And what if i want to use optical 1 or 2? i've inserted a diagram to try to help explain.

setup

help pls? im just confused on what exactly to do in the OSD..

RTFM? I don't know how we would be able to tell you about the OSD of a specific receiver model, especially when you don't even give us the model number.

I've read the manual a few times now. its the onkyo TX-SR701. it simply shows how to hook up ONE component device to it. I'd imagine my question is standard for all receivers and if not sorry to offend.

360 and DVD will connect to the upper left inputs. Also use the optical out for the 360 and the DVD player if you can. Than take the monitor connections out to the TV via component and connect them to video 1 input of the TV. Set the TV to only use video 1. Than you just select the inputs on the AV for what ever you want to view.

Usually the receiver will label each of the video inputs on the back as V1, V2 etc corresponding to buttons on the front and on the remote. Connect the component OUT on the receiver to one of the video INPUTs on the TV, and turn the TV to that input. Use the receiver to switch between the different V1, V2, V3, etc, to select different inputs.

Is that what you were asking?

edit: in your diagram it looks like you're connecting a video INPUT on the receiver to a video INPUT on the tv (in yellow). You should find the component OUT on the receiver and connect it to that input on the TV.

On a receiver are V1, component 1 and optical 1 all considered the same source?

close.

The reciever has Video 1 video 2 and video 3 it also has component 1 and 2. But on the remote and on the front of the receiver there is no component 1 and 2 (HD source). Does the reciever see them as the same source and thats what i set up in the OSD?. Reading the manual i would hit the dvd button on the front of the receiver and set it for component 1. Im assuming i can then set Video 1 as component 2 and that being how i switch between component one and two....am i wrong?

Usually a receiver has a ton of video settings and associates each of them with a video input. So in your case DVD is a video setting permanently associated with component 1. Then (on mine) you configure an optical audio out to the video source you want to use it for (since there are usually more video inputs than optical inputs). Again, this stuff is really receiver specific, and the manual should tell you.

The third component source shown in the diagram is its output and then going to the TV's input.

i think im just going to have to play around with the settings when i get home.

I'm pretty sure the OSD for the Onkyo receivers will not display through HDMI. Best bet is to hook up a s-video cable to your tv (or whatever else you have available) and just let it lay dormant until you need to get into the OSD. Then just switch over your tv's input to s-video when you need to play with the OSD.

I think this answers my questions..

Component Video
The video signal from the input jacks set at the ?b. Component
Video? setting is output to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks.
Use this setting if you connect monitors like TV to the COMPONENT
VIDEO OUT jacks on the TX-SR701/701E/601/601E.
For example, when you connect the DVD player to the
COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT 1 jacks, select ?DVD? as input
source and set ?b. Component Video? to ?INPUT 1.?
The default settings are given below.
* TX-SR701/701E only
INPUT 1: Selects when the video device is connected to the
COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT 1 jacks.
INPUT 2: Selects when the video device is connected to the
COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT 2 jacks.
Last: Select to have the video of the previous input source
continued.

Did you figure out how to assign audio inputs to the different component sources yet?
