Here's the story.. I hooked up this 2.5" hdd (40gb) my computer via a USB 2.0 enclosure. I wanted to erase it because I'm selling it. I started up Partition Magic 8.0 and told it to delete all the partitions and "Secure Erase" so no data can be recovered.

It went up until 30%, then errored. Now the drive shows as 40GB completely unallocated data. I tried to create a new partition, but I got error #702. I tried it every way I could. NTFS, ext3, FAT, same error. I tried it with and without drive letters, start at the end, start at the beginning.

Read about error #702 - http://tinyurl.com/dbhht (useless...)

I also tried using Windows native disk management. Trying to create a partition gives an error and says to check the system log. I don't even know where the system log is, and I can guarantee it doesn't offer any helpful info.

My next step is to mount the drive in linux but I never mounted a usb drive before, so it may be difficult. I wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas first.

system log is accessed a few ways... for u i'd suggest right-click my computer, choose manage. Then under event viewer choose system. Look for errors there

Yep, I think the culprit here is the USB enclosure. Try to reformat it in an actual notebook or get another enclosure to try it. There are so many different USB chip that is used in those enclosure that you have to be careful what you got for your money. Many cheat ones are just plain junks.
