Probably nothing real bad. They're basically the same. I'd go ahead and drain it and put regular oil in it though.

yeah...just like notfred said you should be fine...go ahead & drain out the fluid. And while you are at it go beat your friend over the head with a bucket for being a stunad.

I have no idea why a bucket, but it works for me

oil is oil.. but the transmission fluid isnt much heat resistance as the engine oil (atleast that is what I was told).. just drain and refill.

To be safe I would drain and refil both the oil and filter, then drive around the block, and then drain and refil again. But I'm anal.

If you really wanna be anal, flush it out at one of your oil change stores. But that'll cost you money :) its also a better way to change oil.

Tranny oil in engine...Drain and refill.
Engine oil in tranny...entire tranny has to be flushed of engine oil at an experianced transmission shop.

Reguardless to popular opinion, oil and tranny fluid are not basically the same. Most tranny fluids have detergents in them
(read abrasive= not good on engine bearings). It will thin out the oil, also not good on bearings.

Drain and refill, and make sure to change the filter.

I've known people to use tranny fluid in their engine's to free sticky hyd. lifters, so it's not that bad. You just don't want to drive it TOO much before you change the oil again. Also alot depends on the ratio of oil to tranny fluid. Tranny fluid IS a lot thinner and if he has too much fluid in there it will cause several things to happen.
#1 The cylinder wall's may become scored.
#2 The engine bearings may be damaged.
#3 The valve seal's may get worn.

But once again, if he has say 70/30 oil to tranny fluid (or more oil less tranny fluid) he should be OK for awhile, as long as he doesn't drive it too hard or let it over heat.

EDIT: Also a LOT depends on the age and overall condition of the engine. If it's a older high milage engine your apt to do damage quicker. But if it's a new car and still under warrenty, change it right away, as it may void the warrenty!
