Current or previous build goes a little something like this:
Phenom II X4 B35 3.2ghz (Stock Voltage)
XFX 5850 (ZAFC)
6GB DDR3 Kingston PC3 8500
MSI 790X-G45 mobo.
Win7
All tucked into a CoolerMaster HAF 922

Last time I upgraded anything was back in 2012, according to Newegg.

I don't think I'll ever be getting back into "serious" gaming like I was back pre-2012. But with this information, would this still be a viable machine for anything nowadays? I enjoy battlefield, rdr2 and the like.

You could turn it into a router / nas / file server and build something new for whatever you want to use it for or buy something prebuilt instead.

You could probably build something newer for under $1K though unless those games are demanding and need a beefy GPU. Right now prices are dropping on existing inventory as new products are ramping up for release soon. The cycle for new releases usually hits around August but the cadence seems to be picking up speed in 2024 for some odd reason.

You could likely still play some legacy games but anything newer likely won't run at all or at least won't run well. RDR2 for example has the following requirements listed:
Minimum system requirements

  • OS: Windows 10 64 Bit
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-2500K / AMD FX-6300
  • Memory: 8GB
  • Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2GB / AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB
  • Sound Card: DirectX compatible
  • HDD: 150GB
Recommended system requirements

  • OS: Windows 10 64 Bit
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
  • Memory: 12GB
  • Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB / AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB
  • Sound Card: DirectX compatible
  • HDD Space: 150GB
You fall short on all of the minimum requirements.

I figured she wouldn't be up to snuff on anything in the last 5 or so years, unfortunately 😅

It's just gathering dust in the garage. I did fire it up a few years ago and had some trips down memory lane with cod4 and bc2.

Not sure if I'd be able willing to fork out the cash right now to revive it as I already have a ps5 and xb1.

I appreciate the input fellas!
