Need some advice...

Hey guys I am running a 6950 at 900/1300 1536 shaders. I was wondering if a 5850 crossfire setup would perform better than this and whether I should take the leap. I can get 2x 5850 from a friend for 280~ dollars and sell this one for about 260~ dollars so it would be a 20$ loss on my part. What do you guys think I should do? Rest of the system in the sig. I was considering SLI but my motherboard doesn't support SLI. Thanks in advance.

The 5850s would be faster.. about 5970 faster. I wouldn't take the plunge as the gap is rather small and a 6950 or 6970 which is what you have is better going forward 2gb of ram better tesselation, better high resolution performance and all that.

Alright how about a 6870 crossfire?

About the same. They're also 1GB instead of 2GB like 6950, and although the naming convention makes them sound like the next-gen step from 5850/5870, the 6850/6870 are only approximate equals, better in some ways, worse in others.

68xx is apparently more efficient at CF than the 4xxx and 5xxx series were, so that's good. 6850/70 crossfire would be noticably faster than a single 6950, but a CF 6950 would dominate it, particularly for longevity as 2GB memory becomes more useful (it already is at anything past 1920x1080, and rare occassions AT 1920x1080).

Your only logical choice is to save your $, and get a second 6950 at some point, now that would be a leap. 6950 is already a brilliant card, it shouldn't choke in any game right now short of 2560 res, and if you play at that res you're gonna want CF/SLI anyway.
