I am thinking of building a second PC, this using the case from my old Compaq 5WV280

Currently this PC has a 900Mhz Athlon Thunderbird in it, but I thought I would try making it into a P4, since I already built an A64 a couple of months ago (sig).

I really would like to use the same case, but my concern with it is airflow, and it would not be adequate enough to keep a P4 processor cool, since it has been said that they run hot, particuraly, the Prescott.

Should I go with a P4 or another A64?

I would still use this PC as my main PC, ie. checking email, surfing, coding, but with the ability to run many of the latest games.

Thanks.

AMD procs run cooler, use less power and outperform P4s in most applications. I recently built an AMD box for the first time, and I am very pleased with the performance. If I were building another PC, I would use AMD hands-down. Your mileage may vary.

Definitely go with AMD Athlon 64! I built my second athlon rig about a month ago and am extremely happy.

Note: You should at least consider getting a new case but if your determined to keep the compaq case then be sure it accepts "3rd Party" motherboards. Most major PC manufactors make their own pc "standards" so that you can only use their parts. Basically, the Compaq case may only take a compaq motherboard.

good point. I did take the compaq board out and tried another board in it, and it fit. But then again the other board came out of a Compaq as well.

I guess I am just trying to see if I can rebuild that Compaq into a much better PC.
