Something happened to my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 when I was moving out from my parents place. When I installed it in my new appt, and turned it on, I felt a nasty burning smell from the left satellite speaker. Now it wont work at all. The right one works fine.

Also, I realized some of the red and black spring clips on the back of the sub that connect wires to satellite speakers broke and the springs fell out. No idea how it happened, because I was extremely careful transporting the whole thing...

Anyway, just to test out, I connected another crappy satellite speaker to the left channel and that also doesn't work. So then the left channel must be dead on the sub output itself.

Then I connected my lepai amp. http://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-2020A...keywords=lepai to the satellite speakers without the sub and the left satellite is working now, but it sounds teeny and really really crappy. So now that makes me think BOTH the left speaker AND the left channel on the sub are dead.

I ordered a new spring clip panel on ebay, and a new satellite speaker. All that ran me about $25. If I will have to buy a new sub, I rather buy a whole new system since the sub is like $80 by itself.

So some questions, some slightly unrelated:

1)Is it possible to repair the left speaker all by myself without much electrical knowledge? I do have soldering experience, but I know nothing about speakers insides. Is it even worth it?

2)What are some relatively cheap descent sound systems now? Around $100? I am not an audiophile, but I want ok sound for both games, movies and music.

3)If I was to buy just a pair or bookshelf speakers and a sub not specifically designed for a computer, I would have to plug my amp into the sound port on my sound card and that would leave me with nowhere to connect my headphones. Is there any way to connect BOTH the headphones AND the sound system?

My sound-card is HT|Omega Claro.

4)In layman's terms, what's the difference between an amp and a receiver? Am I understanding correctly if I say an amp just boosts sound, while a receiver makes the sound better/cleaner?

Many questions, I know, but I'd love it if someone could answer in detail.
