Need some advice regarding Cable Modem & Cable Router

Im finally about to get cable internet access after having to give it up for a little over a year - we bought a new house in an area that didn't have it yet. What a tough year.

Anyway - in the past set up, I used my machine with W2K server & ICS to provide access for my machine , my wifes and my one or two notebooks I'd bring home from work. It worked fine but now I'm considering incorporating a router into my home network. This way, I can turn off my machine & still provide access for my wifes machine as well as adding the added firewall protection provided by the router.

Since my cable company only rents cable modems - I'm planning on buying one and would like anyone with experience in this area to provide advice as to the best equiptment. I'm currently leaning toward the Motorola Surfboard 4100.

I have a Sohoware 5-Port 10/100 Autosensing switch - so I think I just need a good router. I would also like it to provide firewall functionality.

My friend has tried the Lynksis
BEFSR11 - EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router - No built in switch
and
BEFSR41 - EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch

I would go with one of these but he's having problems playing Strarcraft multiplayer within his network (not on-line) - it seems the router is interfering with the IPX/SPX protocol required for internal network play.

Any imput would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

Most SOHO routers will NOT pass IPX traffic. That shouldn't, however, affect LOCAL communications, since nothing should be traversing both interfaces on the router. Does your friend know definitively that his problem is the router?
Still, since you already have a 5 port switch, the single port Linksys model would probably be best for you.

I love my SMC 7004ABR, it even has a built in print server. I don't know know about openig ports for games though. I'd kinda lik eto host a RTCW server on mine.

Don't forget to check out http://practicallynetworked.com/ for great info and reviews or hardware

BTW: I actually use an SMC ABR also, and prefer the SMC to the Linksys models.

How is the SMC?
I have a linksy BEFSR41 and it works great, i do notice some DNS drops here and there, but since i went to static IP's and manually added my ISP's dns servers it has gone away.
I suspect that issue to be ISP specific , they only list one DNS server!
Can you believe it!

Thanks for all the input - I decided and purchased the Motorola Surfboard SB4100 & the SMC 7004ABR

BTW - My friend switched out his NIC card from a netgear to a linksys & all is well. It seems that linksys plays better with it's own family - imagine that - nepotism in harware!!
